Job summary

Cone Health Medical Group is seeking a Medical Assistant Certified to support providers in an outpatient setting. The role involves clinical and administrative tasks, patient data collection, specimen handling, and EMR documentation under supervision.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  • CMA/RMA certification from an AAMA/AMT/NCCT/AAH/NHA/etc. is required or preferred.
  • BLS CPR certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support basic patient data collection under supervision.
  • Prepare patients and equipment for routine procedures.
  • Assist with preventive care activities and screenings.
  • Identify and report abnormal findings to the provider.
  • Follow clinical protocols based on visit reason.
  • Perform routine procedures after training and demonstrated competency.
  • Maintain clean, stocked exam rooms and safe environment.
  • Assist with specimen collection and routing.
  • Document information in the EMR under supervision.
  • Administer medications including immunizations under provider supervision.
  • Assist with scheduling and basic check-in/check-out tasks.
  • Support pre-certification, referrals and prior authorizations.
  • Manage simple patient calls/messages using scripts.
  • Navigate EMR and restock supplies as directed.

Job description

The Medical Assistant Certified delivers team-based patient care under the direction of a Provider, following established care plans that support each patient’s needs. Working under close supervision in an outpatient setting, this role performs routine clinical and administrative tasks to assist providers and the care team. The Medical Assistant helps maintain safe, timely, and efficient clinic operations by supporting daily patient care activities and workflow.

Essential Job Functions
Clinical Support
  • Supports basic patient data collection by gathering and documenting biological, psychological, social, and cultural information under close supervision.
  • Prepares patients and standard equipment for routine clinical procedures, ensuring comfort and readiness.
  • Assists with preventive care activities, including basic screenings and health maintenance reminders.
  • Identifies and reports potential abnormal findings to the provider or supervising team member.
  • Follows established clinical protocols based on the patient’s reason for visit, seeking guidance as needed.
  • Performs routine clinical procedures after completing required training and demonstrating competency; may include point of care testing and basic diagnostic support.
  • Maintains exam rooms by cleaning, restocking supplies, and ensuring a safe, organized environment.
  • Assists with specimen collection, labeling, and routing according to established procedures.
  • Documents clinical information accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record under supervision.
  • Administers medications, including immunizations and other basic treatment modalities, following organizational policies, medical assisting standards, and the rights of medication administration under direct provider supervision.
Administrative Support
  • Assists with appointment scheduling and basic patient check-in/checkout tasks.
  • Supports pre-certification, referral and prior authorization processes by gathering information and routing requests as directed.
  • Manages simple incoming patient calls and messages using standard scripts and standing protocols.
  • Performs basic EMR navigation for documentation, orders, and patient communication under supervision.
  • Assists with tracking and restocking clinical supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Reports safety and compliance concerns promptly.
Education
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Completions of Medical Assistant Program
Experience

Required No prior Medical Assistant experience required

Preferred

  • Up to 1 year of experience in a clinical or ambulatory setting preferred
  • Completion of medical assistant program including clinical rotation and physician office experience.
  • Prior work, educational or volunteer experience requiring customer service, team collaboration and attention to detail

Participation in a clinical orientation, competency evaluation, and ability to pass a clinical skills assessment and medication administration test within ninety (90) days of hire, and within 3 attempts.

Licensure/Certification/Listing
  • Required: Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA)/Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required from one of the following: American Associate of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Allied Health - RMA(AAH), National Health career Association (NHA), American Registry of Medical Assistants (RMA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA), American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
  • BLS (CPR)-American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider.
