Job summary

Michigan Humane in Detroit operates a busy urgent care clinic and is seeking a Clinic Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). You will provide direct support to Clinic Veterinarians, including anesthesia monitoring, outpatient and hospitalized care, dentals, lab work, and radiographs in a fast-paced environment.

The role emphasizes triage, assisting in urgent procedures, and close collaboration with the medical team to deliver high-quality care for pets and their families.

Qualifications

• Previous training and experience in the veterinary field.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced urgent care setting.
• Must be licensed by the State of Michigan in veterinary technology.
• Must be educated in microscopy and radiation safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Escort patient to the exam room and get full history from owner; educate clients; discuss treatment cost and review doctor instructions; fill and properly label prescriptions.
• Triage ill and injured animals and be able to respond in emergency situations.
• Prepare and assist in urgent procedures, to include trauma triage, surgery, and wound care.
• Place microchips, administer vaccines, and administer controlled substances under veterinary supervision ensuring to keep an accurate log of said drugs as required.
• Perform cytology such as ear and skin tests; examine fecal samples for parasites; perform heartworm tests.
• Assist in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepare patients for surgery; assist the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitor patients during surgery and recovery; administer fluids; log controlled substances; complete surgical paperwork.
• Place intravenous catheters, administer and monitor fluid administration, and perform phlebotomy.
• Identify animals' body language and their pain scale.
• Miscellaneous duties including general housekeeping and cleaning of kennels, maintaining medical supply stock, and other general animal husbandry duties as needed.
• Assist veterinarians in performing humane euthanasia when required.

Job Overview

The Clinic Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) provides Clinic Veterinarians with direct support through various technical and nursing skills including administering and monitoring anesthesia, treating outpatient and hospitalized animals as well as performing dentals, laboratory tests, and radiographs.
