Job summary

Trinity Health in Kentucky is seeking a full-time lab technician to assist in specimen collection, processing, and testing. The role includes education of patients on proper specimen collection and coordination of orders with providers.

The position requires basic education with related coursework and experience in a clinical lab environment. Work includes rotating shifts and adherence to QA/QC processes under supervision.

Qualifications

  • High school education with up to one year of related coursework.
  • Experience preferred in a clinical lab setting and with phlebotomy-related tasks.
  • Familiarity with laboratory workflows and QA/QC concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Proficient in procuring blood samples via venous and capillary techniques across age ranges.
  • Uses Laboratory Information System to activate, order, and result laboratory tests.
  • Educates patients on proper specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum).
  • Reviews provider orders and may call offices to obtain missing orders.
  • Processes specimens properly, including centrifuging and preserving sample integrity.
  • Prepares specimens for transfer to reference laboratories and handles STAT transfers.
  • Performs waived and moderately complex CLIA testing under supervision.
  • Keeps accurate temperature monitoring and quality control records.

Description:


  • Proficient in the procurement of blood samples via venous and capillary techniques, from patients ranging in age from infant to geriatric.


  • Utilizes use of the Laboratory Information System for activating, ordering, and resulting laboratory orders from providers and to result laboratory tests.


  • Educates patients in the proper collection of specimens such as urine, stool and sputum.


  • Reviews orders from providers, maintaining accuracy in ordering tests; occasionally must call providers’ offices to obtain orders.


  • Processes specimens in the appropriate way, including looking up specimen requirements, centrifuging and separating as necessary, and storing at the appropriate temperature to maintain sample integrity and testing acceptability.


  • Readies specimens for transfer to reference laboratories, including completing the required paperwork for transfer and ensuring STAT specimens are processed and transported in a timely manner, including calling a STAT courier and completing the necessary paperwork for the transfer.


  • Performs both waived and moderately complex CLIA testing in hematology, urinalysis, and serologiy areas under the guidance and supervision of an MLT or MT.


  • Keeps accurate records, such as temperature monitoring, quality control for all laboratory testing and daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.



General Requirements:


  • Education: High school plus additional course work up to 1 year


  • Training Preferred: Medical Assistant, Certified Phlebotomist, or other healthcare studies


  • Experience: Less than 1 year experience required.
