Job summary

Chesterfield County Public Schools in Virginia is seeking a Clinic Assistant to provide health care support for students on site. You will admit and discharge sick students, administer medications, and assist the school nurse with health screenings and basic procedures.

Strong communication and clerical skills are essential, with First Aid/ CPR/AED certification required within three months. FBI and state background checks are required.

Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of medical conditions, symptoms, medications, treatments and proper hygiene.
  • Some knowledge of childhood growth and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess illnesses, injuries, seizures and determine appropriate immediate treatment.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain appropriate medical assistance to handle emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic clerical tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff and parents in a professional manner.

Responsibilities

  • Admits and discharges sick students in the clinic.

  • Treats minor injuries and health emergencies.
  • Contacts emergency services and parents when necessary; performs first aid and CPR until help arrives.
  • Assists school nurse in health screenings, examinations and other medical, health and hygiene procedures.
  • Processes student attendance daily, at principal’s discretion
  • Provides clerical assistance – typing, filing, maintaining records and ordering supplies.
  • Attends required training, professional development and meetings.

Handles routine and non-routine medical situations within standard medical practices. Work is under general supervision and may require special instruction by a healthcare professional. Contacts are made within and outside the school; may require handling of sensitive information or dealing tactfully with others.
