The Davey Tree Expert Company in Lombard, IL is seeking a climbing arborist trainee to join our outdoor-focused tree care team. You’ll learn to climb, prune, and remove trees as part of a crew, receiving paid training and safety instruction.

This entry-level role emphasizes hands-on skill development with opportunities for advancement and a comprehensive benefits package. Starting pay is $20–$23 per hour, with up to 25% travel; equipment and safety gear are provided, and you’ll complete required

Qualifications

• Love of the outdoors.
• Background in Forestry, Horticulture, Landscaping, or working at heights is preferred.
• Complete Davey Tree Trimmer Orientation Program upon hire.
• Complete Davey Tree First Aid, CPR and defensive driving course upon hire.
• Preferred: Relevant pesticide licenses/certificates, if required by state law.

Responsibilities

• Learn to climb trees and get paid to do that.
• Operate as part of a tree crew while learning new skills.
• Learn pruning and removal services for clients, safely and skillfully.
• Tree identification and pruning guidelines.
• Prune, thin, and remove deadwood in the canopy.
• Install cables, bracing, and lightning protection systems.
• Assist in removal of hazardous trees.
• Maintain tools and equipment including chainsaws and chippers.

Position Overview

Trim and remove trees, remove unwanted, diseased or dying limbs on trees, or to affect the health and safety of trees or surrounding areas by performing the following duties.

Job Duties

What You’ll Do:

• Learn to climb trees! (Yes, we will pay you to do that.)
• Operate as a member of a tree crew while progressively learning new skills
• Learn to perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully for clients. Including but not limited to:
• Tree identification and industry pruning guidelines
• Prune, thin, and remove deadwood throughout the tree canopy
• Learn how to install cables, bracing, and lightning protection systems
• Assist in removal of hazardous trees
• Properly maintain, prepare and operate all tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, and more.
