Climate Organizing Director
Reports to: Deputy Director. Compensation: $92‑101k/year. Hybrid workplace with weekly meetings in Oakland or SF, CA.
Job purpose: Build worker and coalition power to win strategic victories for workers’ rights and good jobs in the era of climate change. Work primarily with the California Labor for Climate Jobs (CLCJ) coalition, developing power‑building strategies, mobilizing workers, and shaping the narrative around climate action as an opportunity for union jobs.
Duties and Responsibilities
CLCJ Organizing & Power Building (70%)
- Lead development, implementation, and updates of the CLCJ coalition’s power‑building and organizing plan, including establishing annual goals and union‑specific plans.
- Serve as organizing project manager to coordinate coalition members’ participation, timelines, materials, and cross‑issue collaboration to meet all deliverables.
- Carry out coalition activities in the campaign workplan: research, convene one‑to‑one meetings, power mapping, organizing and mobilizing, planning for events/actions, etc.
- Develop and implement a leadership development plan to establish individual champions and spokespeople within member unions.
- Develop training materials/curricula and organize political education opportunities for member unions.
- Lead strategies to incorporate CLCJ joint priorities into contract negotiations of member unions.
- Build relationships with representatives and champions within member unions, mobilizing participation in CLCJ coalition meetings and events. Anticipate and flag potential conflicts between allies.
- Coordinate planning of CLCJ worker summits, legislator education days, and other events.
- Engage member unions, worker centers and community groups to participate in CLCJ campaigns and actions.
CLCJ Strategy Development & Campaign Planning (20%)
- Participate in labor/climate campaign strategy and planning processes with campaign staff and partner organizations.
- Support CLCJ strategic planning processes, including organizing retreats.
- Provide content support for communications and policy staff to implement strategy.
- Provide updates on organizing efforts to support campaign fundraising.
General JwJSF Program, Fundraising, Governance & Administration (10%)
- Contribute to organization‑wide campaigns and events supporting JwJSF’s mission.
- Support coordination of the Executive Board and Steering Committee.
- Participate in internal committees, fundraising, communications, organizing drives, and special events.
Required Skills and Experience
- 8+ years in labor and/or community organizing or related fields, including leading campaigns.
- English/Spanish bilingual.
- Strong ability to develop and implement organizing and power‑building infrastructure and plans.
- Deep organizing expertise, experience developing leaders, and building collective power in a coalition.
- Strategic, creative thinker who can innovate and implement new organizing strategies and campaigns – and win.
- Familiarity with the labor movement landscape and running coalition campaigns.
- Demonstrated commitment to combating racial, gender, and class oppression.
- Ability to build relationships and mobilize people from diverse backgrounds within a multi‑racial coalition.
- Ability to navigate complex political dynamics.
- Exceptional time‑management and prioritization skills to meet deadlines independently in a remote/hybrid setting.
- Strong project‑management skills – coordinating timelines, due dates, materials, GDrive files, and ensuring deliverables.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Competent online and in‑person; tech adept.
- Flexible, multitask, and resourceful in a fast‑moving environment while driving clarity and solutions.
- Sense of humor and flexibility appreciated.
Physical Requirements
- Work at a computer for extended periods, communicate via phone, text, and email.
- May need to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (accommodations available). Travel: must travel weekly within the SF Bay Area, regularly statewide, occasionally nationwide.
Working Conditions and Environment
Staff promote a positive, collaborative, supportive environment. Work includes occasional travel and long, irregular hours but supports work/life balance. Hybrid workplace: remote and in‑person work each week; offices in San Francisco and downtown Oakland. In‑person meetings often in evenings and weekends.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary range: $92‑101k, depending on experience.

- Paid vacation: starts with 3 weeks for new employees, increases thereafter.
- Additional paid leave during a scheduled 2‑week winter break.
