Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) invites applications for a Classified Destruction Coordinator in Laurel, MD. The role focuses on safeguarding and destroying classified materials in compliance with NSA EPL requirements and 32 CFR Part 117, supporting the Classified Material Control (CMC) team.

Responsibilities include operating shredding equipment, degaussers, approving purchases, maintaining equipment inventories, and performing destruction pickups.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • At least three years of industrial security-related experience.
  • Understanding of 32 CFR regulations pertaining to safeguarding classified information.
  • Experience with SF-701 & SF-702 forms.
  • Experience operating DAA alarm systems and X10/X11 locks.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license in good standing and ability to lift 30–60 lbs.
  • Eligibility for U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain Top Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Primary Collection Point and SME for destruction of classified/docs per NSA EPL rules.
  • Operate NSA EPL shredding equipment, degaussers, and destruction devices daily.
  • Approve shredder purchases to meet NSA EPL requirements.
  • Maintain an active listing of all shredding devices across campus locations.
  • Perform daily destruction pickups for required sectors and departments.
  • Data entry using Service-Now, MDRS, and Microsoft Office.
  • Resolve discrepancies and respond to inquiries about Classified Destruction Material and RODs.
  • Support CMC personnel at Main Campus and MP6 locations.
  • Transport classified documents using APL vehicles and provide courier services.
  • Maintain destruction records and issue receipts.

We are seeking a Classified Destruction Coordinator to help provide safeguarding and destruction support for classified material at the Laboratory. The Classified Material Control (CMC) team is an integral piece of the overall mission of the Security Administration Group, which aims to provide superior security administration services to JHU/APL, while executing the requirements, restrictions, and safeguards prescribed by the NISPOM 32 CFR Part 117 to safeguard classified information. Our team provides excellent assistance to JHU/APL programs and staff in the arenas of classified material control, personnel security clearances and classified visits. While serving JHU/APL, we continuously strive to partner with government and industry security leaders to improve and streamline the administration that surrounds the protection of classified information.

As a Classified Destruction Coordinator, you will...
  • Serve as the Primary Collection Point and Destruction Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the destruction of classified and administratively restricted documents and media (e.g., hard drives, CDs, DVDs, and thumb drives) in accordance with NISPOM 32 CFR Part 117 security requirements.
  • Perform daily use and maintenance of NSA EPL industrial shredding equipment, degaussers, and destruction devices.
  • Approve shredder purchase requisitions for APL Sectors and Departments requiring new shredding equipment to ensure that all shredding devices purchased meet NSA EPL requirements.
  • Maintain an active listing of all shredding devices located within the APL Campus location(s).
  • Perform daily destruction pickups for Sectors and Departments requiring SECD destruction services.
  • Perform data entry using Service-Now, MDRS, and Microsoft Office.
  • Problem solve discrepancies and respond to inquiries involving Classified Destruction Material and Records of Destruction (ROD's).
  • Provide support to CMC personnel at Main Campus and MP6 locations.
  • Utilize APL vehicles to transport classified documents for destruction and perform courier services for classified documents.
  • Maintain destruction records and provide receipts to staff for media received/destroyed.
Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you ...

  • Have an Associate's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Have at least three years of industrial security-related experience.
  • Have understanding of 32 CFR regulations as they pertain to safeguarding classified information.
  • Have experience with security forms SF-701 & SF-702.
  • Have experience operating DAA alarm systems and X10/X11 locks.
  • Are proficient in using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of staff.
  • Are able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Have strong organizational skills with excellent follow-through and attention to detail.
  • Are able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs to 60 lbs.
  • Have a valid state-of-residence driver's license in good standing.
  • Hold an active Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Have in-depth knowledge of APL's practices and procedures, facilities, services, and key personnel.
  • Have experience with system enhancement and integration.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of accountability, handling, and destruction of classified material in accordance with 32 CFR requirements.
  • Are familiar with the 32 CFR and other DoD regulations concerning the handling of classified material.
  • Hold an active Top Secret security clearance.
