At the Kentucky State Penitentiary, the mission is to promote safety for the citizens of the Commonwealth byoperating an efficient adult correctional institution. Our main purpose is to provide a safe, secure, humaneenvironment for its residents and to prepare incarcerated felons for a successful reintegration into societyusing constructive classification, employment training programs and treatment services and social programs.

The Classification and Treatment Officer is vital to this mission by performing duties in the evaluation,assessment and counseling of inmates.

Responsibilities:
  • Interview, evaluate and assess inmates to identify behavioral patterns
  • Develop case history on inmates
  • Serve on committees to determine classification
  • Prepare reports to assist with classification
  • Provide daily counsel to inmates regarding the institution as well as personal or family matters
  • Respond to inmate requests and outside agencies

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional experience in corrections, law enforcement, or a related field will substitute for the education on a year for year basis. Current or prior military experience will substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an office setting within a correctional institution.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
