Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking an Auto Field Appraiser to join our claims team in a full-time role. The position involves physical and virtual inspections, preparing repair estimates, and negotiating cost‑effective repairs in compliance with company guidelines and state regulations.

Candidates should have 3–5 years of appraisal experience, a valid driver's license with a clean MVR, and an Appraisal License. Proficiency with CCC One, Windows, Excel and Word is expected.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of related appraisal experience, preferably with an insurance carrier.
  • A valid State driver's license, clear MVR, and Appraisal License.
  • Ability to work independently within specified limits and authority.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing situations, requirements, or priorities.
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to resolve conflict fairly.
  • Familiarity with CCC One or other auto estimating systems; proficiency with Windows, Excel and Word.

Responsibilities

  • Perform physical and virtual inspections of vehicle damage as part of the claims adjuster process; may handle complex inspections with minimal oversight.
  • Prepare written repair cost estimates following company guidelines and state regulations; apply independent judgment where warranted.
  • Negotiate cost‑effective repair figures per guidelines and regulations.
  • Conduct timely supplemental inspections for additional damage discovered during repairs.
  • Identify fraud indicators and apply policy coverage knowledge.
  • Complete field appraisals on an automated appraisal system at inspection or estimate review; determine actual cash values for total loss vehicles.

Our Claims team is currently seeking an experienced Auto Field Appraiser to join the team.

This is a full time, non-exempt role.

The position is responsible for all aspects of the appraisal process for damage included but not limited to automobiles, trucks, motor homes, travel trailers, motorcycles and snowmobiles. Responsibilities include physical inspection of vehicle damage, written documentation of damage, appraisal of repair costs, negotiation of cost-effective repair alternatives according to Company guidelines, entry of appraisal into Company system, and timely completion of assignments. Company vehicle provided.

POSITION OVERVIEW
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL
  • Perform physical and virtual inspections of vehicle damage as part of claim adjusting process; may handle inspections associated with highly complex claims with minimal oversight.
  • Prepare written repair cost estimates, applying Company guidelines and State regulations and exercising independent judgment when warranted.
  • Negotiate cost-effective repair figures according to Company guidelines and State regulations.
  • Perform timely supplemental inspections of additional damage discovered during course of repair.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and identifies fraud indicators.
  • Apply knowledge of basic policy coverage.
  • Be responsible for completing field appraisals on an automated appraisal system at the time of inspection or estimate review.
  • Be responsible for determination of actual cash values for total loss vehicles.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY
  • 3-5 years of related appraisal experience, preferably with an insurance carrier.
  • A valid State driver's license, clear MVR, and Appraisal License.
  • With minimal oversight, performs work independently within specified limits and authority.
  • Shows a willingness to adapt to new or different changing situations, requirements or priorities.
  • Must be flexible with respect to work scheduling issues or changes that may arise unexpectedly due business needs or demands.
  • Ability to negotiate skillfully in difficult situations with both internal and external groups.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to deal with conflict and resolve issues promptly and fairly is key.
  • Familiarity with CCC One or another auto estimating system required along with Windows proficiency, Excel and Word.

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive or spot recognition awards.
