Job summary

Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to join our Nuclear Services Division and contribute to design, analysis, and construction of nuclear facilities.

This role supports proposals and projects in nuclear generation, interfacing with other divisions to integrate nuclear design with high-voltage and transmission design. The position requires a BS in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis and 5+ years in design, plus potential PE licensure within one year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with structural emphasis is required
  • Master's degree or higher is preferred
  • PE registration (or ability to obtain within one year) is required or highly preferred
  • Minimum 5 years' design experience, 2 years in nuclear plant modifications
  • Experience with multiple nuclear clients/vendors is preferred
  • On-site access to nuclear plants is highly preferred or required
  • Familiarity with IP-ENG-001 and civil codes (AISC, ASTM, ACI) is required
  • Proficient in MS Office; experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Vault, Risa, ANSYS preferred

Responsibilities

  • Prepare scoping documents and proposals for civil modifications and cost estimates
  • Report to engineering supervisor on multi-discipline proposals and act as Responsible Engineer for Civil projects when required
  • Conduct field walkdowns to verify plant structures and configurations
  • Perform civil design activities to support design change documentation
  • Prepare design change packages for modifications at operating nuclear plants
  • Prepare engineering calculations, reports, and checks of structural drawings
  • Ensure strict adherence to civil codes and standards

Our Nuclear Services Division specializes in providing high-quality engineering, procurement, design, and project management for operating and new reactor clients, and partners with our other divisions to integrate nuclear design with electrical high-voltage, substations, switchyard, transmission line, and distribution design. We have been in the top 10 of EC&M's Top 40 Electrical Design Firms since 2012. With over 1,000 associates, we are big enough to perform, but small enough to care!

Mesa Associates is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to join our nuclear services team and contribute to the design, analysis, and construction of nuclear facilities. This is an opportunity to play a critical role in the engineering and design processes for commercial nuclear power generation. Mesa's strategic growth strategy for our commercial nuclear division is to create a ready service pool of available staff to support proposals and projects in nuclear generation.

The position is hybrid working a minimum of 3 days in the office, typically Tuesday through Thursday, with the ability to work from home the remaining workdays. Candidates must be able to travel to plant sites when needed (approx. 6-8 days/month with ability to support longer durations).

Education/Experience/Licensure
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university (required) – structural engineering emphasis (highly preferred)
  • Master of Science or other advanced degree in engineering (preferred)
  • PE registration (highly preferred) – or ability to obtain PE License within one year of employment (required)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in design (required) and 2 years’ experience in design of modifications in nuclear (DOE or commercial) plants (preferred)
  • Experience working with multiple operating nuclear clients and vendors (preferred)
  • On-site and past unescorted access (highly preferred) or ability to obtain unescorted access at an operating or construction nuclear plant (required)
  • Experience with Industry Standard Design Procedure IP-ENG-001 (required)
  • Strong knowledge of civil design codes (AISC, ASTM, ACI)
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite). Additional software skills including Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Vault, Risa, ANSYS (preferred)
Responsibilities
  • Prepare scoping documents and proposals to determine extent of modifications required, preparing cost estimates for engineering/design activities for Civil
  • Report to an assigned engineering supervisor on multi-discipline proposals and projects and act as a Responsible Engineer for Civil projects when required
  • Conduct field walkdowns to determine existing configuration of plant structures, systems, and components
  • Perform a broad range of Civil design activities to support development of design change documentation
  • Be responsible for working with other engineers and designers to prepare design change packages for modifications at operating nuclear plants and other associated nuclear facilities
  • Be proficient in preparation of engineering change packages (EC’s), Engineering calculations, reports, review and check structural drawings
  • Follow a strict adherence to civil codes and standards
Successful Candidates Will
  • Possess the ability to interpret codes, regulations, and standard practices
  • Be able to demonstrate adaptability; must be proficient in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving issues within a nuclear power plant environment
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills (including technical writing)
  • Possess excellent communication skills and ability to interface with customers and internal team members under a matrixed organization
