JOB TITLE: Civil-Structural Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Generation Engineering Services - Central; Kansas City Headquarters or Topeka General Office

LOCATION: Kansas City, MO Topeka, KS

PAY RANGE: Competitive and Dependent upon Qualifications

Scheduled Work Hours

Monday - Friday, hours can be flexible. Opportunity exists for hybrid work arrangements, flexible work hours, and 9/80 schedule. Occasional evenings, weekends, and extra hours may be required to support 24/7/365 operations. Qualified overtime is reimbursed at time and a half rate. Local travel to generation sites will be regular and occasional overnight travel may be required. Net mileage is reimbursable or the option to reserve and use a fleet vehicles exist.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Evergy is seeking an experienced, competent, motivated, knowledgeable, and accomplished engineer to support power generation facilities. The successful candidate must be a self-starter and able to resolve complex engineering problems with limited support. Familiarity with electric generating facilities and associated buildings and equipment is strongly preferred. Applicants must be able to locate, comprehend, and interpret facility civil, architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings.

The successful candidate will be responsible for executing and managing numerous projects simultaneously ranging from small facility improvements to larger capital projects. This includes planning, inspecting, evaluating, assessing, and specifying recommendations for repair and improvements on the infrastructure of the plants. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include, but not be limited to:

• Perform minor structural analysis, design, detailing, and forensic investigation.
• Perform design of new, or evaluation of existing, overhead monorails, lifting beams, and rigging lugs and assign rated capacity.
• Perform and document structural inspections and assessments and facilitate proof load testing for special lifting devices.
• Evaluate and design foundations for a variety of applications.
• Interpret surveys, subsurface investigations and other civil engineering activities related to power generation facilities.
• Evaluate Hydrology and hydraulic designs and review evaluations.
• Experience with heavy civil engineering projects (landfills, roadways, bridges, railways, etc) is not direct a requirement for this role, but is valued.
• Design and detail simple platforms and similar structures. Generate details sketched by hand or in AutoCAD (preferred) that comply with Evergy standard structural details.
• Address emergent work at the plants such as items related to access or safety, lifting, rigging, damaged or corroded members, and equipment failure.
• Manage all aspects of projects including planning, defining the scope, assisting the procurement department, performing minor detailed design, and observing construction of civil (primarily structural) related projects. Larger or more complex projects are typically designed and detailed by third party engineering firms.
• Review specifications, design and shop drawings, and other contract documents for compliance with internal and external standards, compliance, and applicable codes.
• Develop budgets, scopes, statements of work, budget forecasting, invoicing and manage moderate to large capital projects.
• Assist the generating facilities with outage support as needed.

Education and Experience Requirements

This position requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited university with interest or experience in the design, maintenance, and construction of power generation facilities, buildings, and similar industrial structures. The applicant must have demonstrable design experience related to the primary duties and responsibilities of the role.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required

The successful candidate must possess high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, quantitative analysis, and exhibit good engineering judgement. Computer skills valued include Microsoft Office applications, AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revu, and RISA-3d. Strong knowledge of ACI, AISC, ASCE, IBC, NFPA, OSHA, as well as other related industry codes and standards is required.

Licenses or Certificates Required

Must have a valid driver's license. PE in Kansas or Missouri or the ability to obtain through comity is required.

Working Conditions

Must have the ability to perform the physical activities of the job. This requires extensive on-site plant work with some office work. The job entails working outdoors in an industrial plant environment with exposure to ambient temperature extremes, dusty/moist environments, as well as noisy, rotating, moving, and electrified equipment. Physical attributes of the job include working at heights on elevated structures and platforms, and working in cramped spaces which may require bending, stooping, and standing and frequent use of ladders and stairways.
