Qualifications

  • Proficient with CAD programs and Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Primary Function:

The Civil Structural Designer performs routine design assignments as a member of a project team, requiring knowledge and skill in basic design techniques and procedures under limited supervision. Knowledge of foundational techniques and civil fundamentals is required. Successful candidates may be placed in a Designer I, II, or III title depending on skill and experience level. The position will be based in our Houston, Texas office located at 12031 Kurland Dr, Houston, TX 77034 and will report to Dashiell’s Supervising Engineer.

Duties & Responsibilities

Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:

  • Produce new drawings from examples of previous projects and/or standards.
  • Produce high voltage substation layouts and elevation drawings from a one-line electrical drawing.
  • Produce conduit and grounding drawings.
  • Calculate cable lengths, conduit fill, or other basic tasks.
  • Create substation bill of materials, including manufacturer part numbers, quantities, footage, etc.
  • Complete work within pre-defined times to meet proposal and project schedules.
  • Oversee project-specific activities of drafters and more junior designers.
  • Research information in catalogs, specifications, corporate standards, or other reference material.
  • Calculate ground grid requirements to IEEE standards using task-specific software as required.
  • Calculate structure heights and weights, concrete volumes, equipment fit-up, or other basic tasks as required.
  • Learn and use task-specific software, including the document management system.
  • Learn and apply corporate standard engineering practices.
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work.
  • Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party.
  • Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in structural substation design, or related experience, is preferred. An Associate’s Degree in Drafting & Design is preferred. Successful candidates with more than five years of experience may be placed in more senior level designer titles depending on skill.

Required

  • Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer is required.
  • Experience in structural drafting of steel structures and concrete foundations.
  • Knowledge of the types of drawings required for foundation and steel construction.
  • Basic knowledge of civil/structural codes and standards including AISC and ACI.
  • Mathematics, including algebra and basic trigonometry.
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD programs such as AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information to team members, management, and clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver’s license required; must maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.

Preferred

  • Experience with Microstation V8 and V8i.
  • Knowledge of the major components of a substation.
  • Strong knowledge of civil/structural codes and standards including NESC, IEEE, ANSI, AISC, and ACI.
Physical Requirements:

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires minimal physical effort.
  • Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work indoors, with occasional outdoor exposure to year-round weather conditions and noise.
  • Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%).
  • Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically.
  • May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
