Job summary

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Civil/Site team in Pittsburgh. You will design land development projects, review regulations, and lead stormwater and utility design efforts.

Required: Civil/environmental degree with 4–8+ years' land development experience and EIT; PE preferred. Proficiency in Civil 3D, MicroStation, and hydrology tools is expected. Growth opportunities and a strong benefits package are offered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering is required.
  • 4 to 8+ years of land development (civil/site) experience is required.
  • EIT certification is required; PE licensure is preferred.
  • Civil 3D skills for site design from concept through completion.
  • Experience with MicroStation and hydrology software is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design land development projects using Civil 3D including site, grading, and utilities.
  • Review zoning ordinances and land development regulations to determine limitations.
  • Site investigations & due diligence including utility research and agency regulations.
  • Prepare concept drawings and coordinate with AutoCAD draftsmen.
  • Lead reviews of stormwater management and conveyance systems using Civil 3D and hydraulics software.
  • Perform pipe sizing calculations for stormwater and create drainage area maps.
  • Evaluate surface runoff, invert, slope, and hydraulic grade line using Rational Method and Manning's.
  • Understand stormwater management design regulations and grading for value engineering.
  • Design subdivisions and site plans and resolve vertical/horizontal utility conflicts.
  • Design utility systems and resolve conflicts; manage soil erosion & sediment control.
  • Prepare construction cost estimates for bonding and client purposes.
  • Potential to lead junior staff and collaborate with Infrastructure for utility coordination.

Overview

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Civil/Site team in Pittsburgh!

We engage with our clients as a strategic partner providing complete civil and site consulting and engineering services to both public and private clients. This partnership begins with comprehensive site feasibility evaluations as part of the due diligence process to identify potential pitfalls and implement strategies to overcome them. We have extensive experience in traditional residential development as well as commercial project types including office, retail, financial, educational, restaurant, mixed‑use, healthcare, landfill, energy, industrial, and warehouse.

Responsibilities
  • Design land development projects using Civil 3D including site, grading, and utilities.
  • Review of municipal zoning and land development ordinances and applicable agency regulations to determine land development limitations for the property.
  • Site Investigation & Due Diligence includes the review of ordinances, utility service research, outside agency regulations, and site visits to establish comprehensive development guidelines.
  • Preparation of Concept Drawings based upon client's development objectives and conclusions of due diligence. Involves preparation of concept plan, including coordination with AutoCAD draftsmen.
  • Leadership role in the review and design of Stormwater Management & Stormwater Conveyance Systems including use of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Hydrology design software.
  • Skills should include preparation of pipe sizing calculations for stormwater conveyance systems including drainage area maps.
  • Surface runoff coefficients, invert, slope, velocity & hydraulic grade line evaluation using the Rational Method & Manning's Equation.
  • Knowledge of stormwater management design regulations.
  • Grading design to ensure value engineering is achieved through earthwork analysis, and site safety is accomplished using appropriate design slopes.
  • Subdivision and site plan design and layout.
  • Design of utility systems including stormwater conveyance, sanitary sewer service, pump station design, water, gas, telephone service, etc. Also involves determination and resolution of vertical and horizontal utility conflicts that may exist.
  • Soil erosion & sediment control design including stability calculations, best management practices, swale design, spillway design, and determination of construction sequence.
  • Preparation of Construction Cost Estimates based upon site plan drawings as required for bonding and client purposes.
  • Potential to take an active leadership role and guide junior staff.
  • Work closely with the Infrastructure department to help with utility coordination and municipal utility design for complex highway and bridge projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering is required.
  • 4 to 8+ years of related land development (civil/site) experience is required.
  • EIT (Engineer in Training) certification is required. PE licensed or working towards licensure is preferred.
  • Demonstrated Civil 3D skills with the ability to design site layouts concept through completion.
  • Experience with MicroStation, HydroCAD, WaterCAD, HEC-HMS/-RAS, OpenRoads, and InRoads is a plus.
  • Prior experience with business development, project management, client facing, or estimating costs is a plus.
  • Proficiency in technical skills in storm water management, hydraulics, hydrological analysis, grading and other site development related designs.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job‑related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
