Job summary

Thompson Engineering seeks a Civil QA/QC Inspector to oversee quality assurance and control for earthworks, concrete, utilities, drainage, and structural components on civil construction projects across the Southeast. You will ensure adherence to codes, standards, project specs, and quality plans, and you will prepare detailed inspection reports and NCRs.

Ideal candidates have 3–5 years in civil QA/QC, knowledge of ASTM/ACI/AASHTO, and experience with ITPs/QCPs.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in civil construction QA/QC.
• In-depth knowledge of industry standards and codes (ASTM, ACI, AASHTO).
• Experience reviewing and implementing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and Quality Control Plans (QCPs).
• Familiarity with construction materials and lab/field testing procedures.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct QA/QC inspections for civil construction activities (earthwork, foundation, concrete, utilities, roadways, structural components).
• Review and interpret project drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
• Prepare and maintain daily inspection reports, test results, NCRs, and corrective action documentation.
• Monitor work to ensure compliance with approved ITPs.
• Coordinate with contractors, site engineers, consultants, and quality managers to address quality issues.
• Verify materials and workmanship meet submittals and standards.
• Attend quality and coordination meetings as needed.
• Ensure inspection and testing records are properly documented and archived.
• Identify recurring quality issues and suggest practical improvements.

The Civil QA/QC Inspector will oversee the quality assurance and quality control aspects of civil construction work including earthworks, concrete, asphalt, utilities, drainage, and structural components. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all construction activities comply with applicable codes, standards, project specifications, and quality plans.

Essential Functions of the Position

• Conduct QA/QC inspections for all civil construction activities, including but not limited to earthwork, foundation, concrete placement, utilities, roadways, and structural components.
• Review and interpret project drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
• Prepare and maintain daily inspection reports, test results, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and corrective action documentation.
• Monitor construction work to ensure compliance with approved inspection and test plans (ITPs).
• Coordinate with contractors, site engineers, consultants, and quality managers to address any quality-related issues.
• Verify materials and workmanship meet the project's approved submittals and standards.
• Attend quality and coordination meetings as needed.
• Ensure that all inspection and testing records are properly documented and archived.
• Support continuous improvement by identifying recurring quality issues and suggesting practical solutions.

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of [3-5] years of experience in civil construction QA/QC, preferably in infrastructure or large-scale projects.
• In-depth knowledge of industry standards and codes (ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, etc.).
• Experience reviewing and implementing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and Quality Control Plans (QCPs).
• Familiarity with construction materials and laboratory/field testing procedures.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and QA/QC reporting tools.
• Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to support project sites.

Preferred Certifications (Not Required, but a Plus):

• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I
• NICET Certification in Civil/Construction Inspection
• OSHA 10 or 30 Certification
• ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems knowledge
• QMS/QA-related training or certifications

Physical Requirements

• Must be willing to work flexible schedules and overtime as needed by the department needs.
• Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 40 lbs.
• Drive a company vehicle in a safe manner
• Walk, stoop, bend, and climb up and down stairs and ladders
• Stand, walk and balance in irregular and uneven terrain and pavements, concrete, grass, dirt and gravel.
• Work in high grounds and high open buildings
• Work outside for extended periods in the heat and cold
• Ability to wear appropriate PPE for hazardous materials
• Ability to read and write in English
