The role oversees civil infrastructure projects from planning through construction, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining budgets, schedules, and client communications. Qualified candidates will have a PE or be pursuing licensure, 8+ years of civil engineering experience, and proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provide project management and technical expertise for civil projects from inception to completion, including proposals and 30-60-90 design process.
• Coordinate all technical activities on assigned projects.
• Plan, schedule, budget, coordinate and conduct assigned civil engineering work.
• Provide primary client coordination and communication; monitor work for compliance to codes and standards; ensure effective communication among disciplines.
• Provide technical expertise to accomplish project goals; assist with recruitment and mentoring of new employees.
• Prepare technical reports; supervise staff engineers in preparing construction plans and specs; attend progress meetings; monitor compliance with codes and standards.

Somat Engineering, Inc. (Somat) has an immediate opening for a Civil Project Manager at our West Bloomfield, MI office. We are seeking energetic and personable experienced engineers who are interested in growing their career in this field.

We are seeking a Civil Project Manager to perform professional services for municipal and private clients, including design services for buildings, airports, tunnels, bridges and water supply and sewage infrastructure. A Civil project manager should bring experience managing budgets, schedules and engineering staff along with strong analytical skills, solution-oriented knowledge, and a collaborative attitude. They will collaborate closely with other engineers and project managers to translate creative vision into functional designs and processes.

Some of the types of activities that they will be involved with are:

• Provide project management and technical expertise for Somat’s civil engineering (water/wastewater, sewer, bridge, structural) projects from inception to completion, including the preparation of proposals and 30-60-90 design process
• Coordination of all technical activities on assigned projects
• This individual will plan, schedule, budget, coordinate and conduct assigned civil engineering work
• Perform project management duties such as: provide primary client coordination and communication; monitor project engineer work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices and standards; ensures effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between all engineering disciplines and all other project participants
• Providing technical expertise for accomplishing project goals
• Client Relations- identifying, obtaining and retaining clients and projects for the company’s target markets
• Assist with recruitment and mentoring of new employees.
• Assist Somat in growth-related and other activities of the company.
• Client interaction on both proposals and project design
• Prepare technical reports
• Supervise project and staff engineers in preparation of construction plans and specifications
• Attend project/progress meetings when required
• Monitor work compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices & standards
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
• 8+ years of civil engineering experience in the private and public sectors
• BS and/or MS in Civil Engineering or closely related field
• Strong written and verbal communications skills
• Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D for Civil design work.
• Ability to apply engineering fundamentals to shifting real world conditions
• Demonstrates motivation to modify schedule as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs
• Experience of the geotechnical, structural and hydraulic engineering projects a plus
• Legal authorization to work in the United States
• Insurable driving record

Role Description

The Civil Project Manager is a full-time, on-site role based in Taylor, MI. This position oversees civil infrastructure projects from planning through construction completion, ensuring work is delivered on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with quality and safety standards. Day-to-day responsibilities include coordinating project activities, leading multidisciplinary teams, managing contractors and consultants, and maintaining clear communication with clients and stakeholders. The Civil Project Manager prepares and reviews project plans, specifications, and reports, monitors progress through site visits and inspections, and proactively addresses technical and logistical issues. The role also involves managing project documentation, supporting permitting and compliance, and contributing to continuous improvement of project delivery processes.

Qualifications

• Project Management skills, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and stakeholder coordination.
• Expeditor and Expediting skills to ensure timely procurement, approvals, and delivery of project materials and documentation.
• Inspection skills to oversee field activities, verify construction quality, and support compliance with plans, codes, and standards.
• Logistics Management skills to coordinate resources, equipment, and workflows across multiple project sites.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field; professional licensure (e.g., PE) or progress toward licensure preferred.
• Experience managing civil or infrastructure projects, ideally in transportation, water/wastewater, or site development.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities with attention to detail and safety.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams and clients.
• Proficiency with relevant engineering and project management software; familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations beneficial.
