We are seeking a highly experienced Tunneling Construction Inspector / Field Engineer to support major utility and infrastructure projects involving underground construction. This role is responsible for overseeing tunneling activities in the field, ensuring all work is performed in accordance with project specifications, safety regulations, and quality standards. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in tunneling methods and hands-on construction oversight experience within complex civil environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide on-site oversight of tunneling operations, including Microtunneling, Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), and shaft construction
- Perform daily field inspections to verify compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, and applicable codes/standards
- Monitor contractor performance, workmanship, and adherence to project schedules
- Prepare and maintain detailed daily reports, field logs, and progress documentation
- Support construction delay analysis, event reporting, and issue tracking
- Review project schedules to identify logic gaps, risks, and potential delays
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders to resolve field issues efficiently
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with OSHA and site-specific requirements
- Communicate project updates, risks, and field challenges clearly to project leadership and senior stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in tunneling or heavy civil construction
- Strong understanding of tunneling means and methods, with hands-on field experience preferred
- Proven experience working with HDD, TBM, Microtunneling, and vertical shaft construction
- Solid knowledge of civil construction practices, equipment, and field operations
- Ability to read, interpret, and analyze construction schedules (Primavera P6 or equivalent preferred)
- Strong proficiency in technical reporting and documentation (Microsoft Word)
- OSHA 10 certification required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical issues to senior leadership
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience will be considered
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting utility or electrical transmission infrastructure projects
- Familiarity with underground transmission cable installation, pulling, or splicing
Physical Requirements
- Ability to safely access active construction sites, including tunnels and vertical shafts
- Comfortable climbing ladders, stairs, and navigating confined spaces
- Capable of performing field duties in varying environmental conditions
