Job summary

IDOT’s Civil Engineer Internship offers hands-on engineering tasks related to planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure. The internship blends office and field work with a flexible schedule.

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a BSCE program, have completed at least 30 post-secondary credits, and be able to commit at least ten hours per week. The position is hourly with a hybrid in-office schedule in Effingham, IL.

Qualifications

• Completion of high school or GED and current enrollment in a BSCE program at an ABET-accredited university or college or in a non-ABET college with intent to enter BSCE within 12 months.
• Completion of thirty (30) credit hours of post-secondary education prior to the start of the internship.
• Education in math to the level of trigonometry.
• Strong interest in working for the department upon completion of the internship.
• Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work during summer breaks.
• Ability to work a minimum of ten hours per week during Fall/Spring semester.

Responsibilities

• Performs supportive engineering tasks related to investigating, planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining transportation infrastructures.
• Provides measurements, analysis, computations, and documentation for assigned tasks.
• Communicates any problems to the supervisor.
• Follows departmental safety rules and treats all employees fairly.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
