Job summary

Schnabel is an employee-owned engineering and consulting firm seeking a temporary full-time Civil Engineering Intern to support our growing practice in Jersey City, NJ. The internship runs May through August 2027 and emphasizes applying professional principles to real problems under supervision.

The role exposes you to geotechnical investigations, wall/excavation design, hydrology, and construction observation, with opportunities for growth, fieldwork, and collaboration with senior engineers.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor's program.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Team player with the ability to follow direction and learn quickly.
• Willingness to perform a mix of office and field tasks, including outdoor work.

Responsibilities

• Assist in geotechnical investigations and analyses and design tasks.
• Prepare construction plans.
• Support advanced earthquake engineering analyses.
• Perform construction observation and materials testing.

Job Description:

We approach problems with creativity and innovation. Schnabel is seeking a temporary full-time intern with a Civil Engineering background to support our growing business. The emphasis for this position is broadening the intern’s practical knowledge and experience by applying professional principles to real problems under the supervision of senior engineering personnel. The position will be held from May through August of 2027.

Job Responsibilities:

• Assisting in performing geotechnical investigations and analyses, retaining wall/excavation support design, hydrology and hydraulic studies; and reinforced concrete design
• Preparing construction plans
• Supporting advanced earthquake engineering analyses
• Performing construction observation and materials testing
• Some travel may be required

Required Skills/Experience:

• Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Bachelor’s. Enrollment in other college engineering or relevant science programs may be considered.
• Possess good oral and written communication skills and computer literacy
• Ability to work with direction as part of a team
• Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work
• Desire and willingness to work outdoors
• Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Skills/Experience:

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• Junior, senior, and graduate students
• Prior professional work or summer intern work in a related field

Other Requirements:

• Must possess a valid driver’s license as driving is an essential function of the job
• Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening

The compensation range for a Civil Engineering Intern is between $19.00 to $25.00 Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
