Job summary

ATCS is seeking a Civil Engineering Intern to join our Newport News, VA team. You will work with engineers on site/civil and land development projects and gain exposure to transportation design.

You’ll assist with site plans, grading, drainage, and utility design while learning how projects move from planning to completion. Ideal candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, have strong analytical and communication skills, and are eager to learn engineering software like AutoCAD,

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Interest in land development, site/civil design, and/or transportation engineering.
• Previous coursework related to civil engineering design is preferred.
• Previous internship or related experience is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Support engineers with site/civil and land development design projects.
• Assist with the preparation of site plans, grading, drainage, utility, and other civil design plans.
• Support transportation and roadway design projects, as opportunities arise.
• Assist with engineering calculations, data collection, and technical documentation.
• Use engineering and design software to prepare plans, drawings, and other project deliverables.
• Support the preparation of reports, exhibits, and other project documentation.
• Collaborate with engineers and team members to complete project tasks.
• Participate in project meetings and gain exposure to the day-to-day work of a civil engineering team.
• Assist with other technical and administrative tasks as needed.

The 2027 Summer Internship Program will run from May/June through August 2027.

This internship will support our Civil Engineering team in our Newport News, VA office.

At ATCS, our interns have the opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on experience while contributing to real projects. As a Civil Engineering Intern, you’ll work alongside engineers and other professionals primarily on site/civil and land development projects, with opportunities to gain exposure to transportation design projects as well. You’ll develop your technical skills while learning how civil engineering projects move from planning and design through completion.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Supporting engineers with site/civil and land development design projects.
• Assisting with the preparation of site plans, grading, drainage, utility, and other civil design plans.
• Supporting transportation and roadway design projects, as opportunities arise.
• Assisting with engineering calculations, data collection, and technical documentation.
• Using engineering and design software to prepare plans, drawings, and other project deliverables.
• Supporting the preparation of reports, exhibits, and other project documentation.
• Collaborating with engineers and other team members to complete project tasks.

Desired Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Interest in land development, site/civil design, and/or transportation engineering.
• Previous coursework related to civil engineering design is preferred.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
• Exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or other engineering/design software is a plus.
