Job summary

Brierley Associates is seeking a highly motivated Civil Engineering student to join several of our offices for a summer internship. You will work on challenging projects including deep excavations, SOE systems, tunnels, and other geotechnical and structural components across North America.

You will assist senior engineers with design, calculations, CAD/BIM drawings, and site visits, gaining exposure to projects nationwide while mentored by experienced staff.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with a structural engineering focus or geotechnical focus with basic coursework in the other area.
  • Applicable courses include steel design, reinforced concrete design, prestressed concrete design, timber design, finite element analysis, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundations.
  • Highly motivated and possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under strict deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel for short-term field assignments.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience with finite element analysis and CAD software is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers with the design of foundations, SOE, falsework, tunnels, underground structures and other geo-structural systems and components; develop concepts and sketches.
  • Analyze and design steel, reinforced concrete, wood, and other structures according to building codes and industry standards using engineering software and calculation tools.
  • Prepare design calculations, sketches, reports, and specifications.
  • Supervise creation of CAD/BIM drawings and models.
  • Collaborate with other Brierley engineers and professionals on projects, pursuits, and company initiatives; make construction site visits to gather information.

Job description

Brierley Associates is seeking a highly motivated Civil Engineering student to join several of our office locations for a summer internships. You will work on challenging projects involving deep excavations, foundations, support-of-excavation (SOE) systems, tunnels, and other complex geotechnical and structural systems across North America. While working at Brierley, you will gain exposure to complex projects nationwide, collaborating with teams across multiple offices. Responsibilities
  • Assist senior engineers with the design of foundations, SOE, falsework, tunnels, underground structures and other types of permanent and temporary geo-structural systems and components, generally consisting of the following tasks:
    • Evaluate and select geotechnical and loading parameters
    • Develop concepts and prepare sketches based on provided information and constraints
  • Analyze and design steel, reinforced concrete, wood, and other structures according to relevant building codes and industry standards while using engineering software and various calculation tools and methods
  • Prepare design calculations, sketches, reports, and specifications
  • Supervise creation of CAD/BIM drawings and models
  • Collaborate with other Brierley engineers and professionals on projects, pursuits, and company initiatives
  • Make construction site visits to gather information or observe ongoing work
Qualifications
  • Working towards a BS or MS in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program
    • Degree shall have a structural engineering focus with basic coursework in geotechnical engineering, OR geotechnical focus with basic coursework in structural engineering
    • Applicable courses include steel design, reinforced concrete design, prestressed concrete design, timber design, finite element analysis, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundations
  • Highly motivated and possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work under strict deadlines
  • Willingness to travel for short-term field assignments
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Experience with the following software is preferred, but not required:
    • Finite element analysis software such as RISA, SAP2000, STAAD, Plaxis, Flac, MIDAS, or others
    • Computer aided drafting software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, or others
