Job summary

The State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, seeks Civil Engineer Trainees for the Bureau of Bridges & Structures in Springfield. This program provides structured training in structural design, project review, and field investigations.

Successful candidates will have a BS in engineering (ABET accredited) or be close to graduation, with potential licensure as an IEI/PE in Illinois. A generous benefits package and a hybrid schedule are offered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of science in engineering from ABET-accredited college (including those expecting to graduate in the next 12 months).
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA; if 2.0–2.5, need a current IEI/PE/Structural license.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and analyzes simple structural, geotechnical, or hydraulic designs for contract plans.
  • Performs design computations for contract plans.
  • Reviews designs for completeness and adequacy.
  • Reviews and approves/rejects contractor proposals for shoring, bracing, and temporary structures.
  • Assists in field investigations.
  • Follows departmental safety rules and treats all employees fairly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Overview

This position assists in the structural, geotechnical, or hydraulic analysis and detailed design required in the production of structural contract plans utilized in the construction of simple bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and traffic structures and for the review of simple construction shoring, bracing, and temporary structure designs prepared by contractors. Work may also include preparation of bridge repair plans, load ratings, bridge management, and bridge standards.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and analyzes simple structural, geotechnical, or hydraulic designs which incorporate current methods and technology.
  • Performs design computations required in the preparation and review of contract plans.
  • Reviews designs prepared by others for completeness and adequacy.
  • Reviews and recommends approval/disapproval of contractor proposals for shoring, bracing, and temporary structures.
  • Assists in performing field investigations.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a bachelor of science degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college (including those expecting to graduate in the next 12 months), OR a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois, OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois.
  • Those applying with only a degree must have a minimum of 2.0 (out of 4.0) cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA). tf cumulative GPA is between 2.0 and 2.5 (out of 4.0), applicants must also possess a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois, OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the routine practices of structural, geotechnical, or hydraulic engineering.
  • Coursework and training in structural, geotechnical, or hydraulic engineering.
  • Working knowledge of engineering software and office software.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and diagnose structural, geotechnical, or hydraulic engineering problems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
