Description

Civil Engineer - Traffic Project Manager

We’re looking for a skilled Traffic Project Manager to join our growing transportation team in the Twin Cities. This role is a strong fit for a professional who enjoys leading projects end-to-end, building lasting client relationships, and mentoring the next generation of traffic engineers, all while staying connected to the technical work you’ve built your career on.

As a project manager at Ayres, you’ll collaborate with experienced traffic, roadway, structural, and construction engineering professionals across our multi-state team. You’ll receive real support from peers and leadership, and you’ll have meaningful input into how our transportation practice continues to grow in Minnesota.

Join Ayres – a USA TODAY Top Workplace recognized in both 2025 and 2026 – where people-first leadership, collaboration, and professional growth create an environment where great teams do their best work.

On any given day, you’ll:

  • Focus on project delivery and client relationship management, with growing involvement in business development as you build your presence in the market:
  • Lead and manage traffic engineering and transportation projects—keeping scope, schedule, budget, and quality on track
  • Serve as a day-to-day client contact for public agencies including MnDOT, counties, and municipalities
  • Perform traffic engineering tasks as needed to support project delivery
  • Prepare and negotiate contract documents
  • Collaborate with project teams across disciplines and office locations
  • Support and mentor less‑experienced traffic engineering staff
  • Contribute to proposals and marketing pursuits for transportation projects
  • Participate in professional organizations at the local, state, or national level
  • Provide input to leadership on business planning, workload, and resource needs

Required qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in transportation/traffic engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Minnesota (or capable of getting reciprocity within first six months of employment).
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in traffic engineering, with exposure to project management and client‑facing work
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to support projects or team needs
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

Areas of experience or interest may include:

We’re interested in candidates with experience or strong interest in any of the following areas, you don’t need to bring all of them:

  • Traffic analysis and modeling tools such as HCS, Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, SIDRA, or similar
  • Traffic signal design, operations, and timing/phasing
  • Traffic impact analyses, operational analyses, and corridor or intersection modeling
  • Multimodal planning involving pedestrians, bicycles, or transit
  • Work zone traffic control and transportation management plans
  • Safety data evaluation and countermeasure development
  • CAD platforms including AutoCAD or MicroStation
  • Specialty credentials such as PTOE or RSP are a plus

Benefits of being part of the Ayres team:

  • Health, dental, and vision Insurance.
  • Short and long‑term disability and life insurance.
  • Employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) and 401K with company match.
  • PTO upon hire, paid holidays including two floating holidays, and a flexible work schedule.
