Job summary

Akima Infrastructure Services (AIS) is seeking a Civil Design Engineer to develop high quality design packages and provide field support at DOE sites including Y-12 in Oak Ridge, TN. You will lead multi-discipline teams and ensure designs meet codes and project needs.

The role requires ABET-accredited engineering credentials with extensive experience, strong communication skills, production environment readiness, and the ability to obtain DOE Q clearance.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited engineering degree with 15–20 years experience or a Masters with 14–18 years.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface with clients and teams.
  • Willingness to work in a production environment.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Pre-employment drug screen and medical examinations may be required.
  • Work may involve performing walk-downs and providing field support.
  • Familiarity with consensus design codes; CAD drafting is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high quality detailed design packages and provide engineering procurement support.
  • Offer field technical support and troubleshoot plant facilities.
  • Collaborate within an integrated project team or as a technical lead for multi-discipline tasks.
  • Routinely perform plant walk-downs to generate design documents and support craft personnel.
  • Apply established engineering practices, codes, and standards to solve problems.
  • Oversee storm/storm drain, road designs, soil evaluation, and external engineering firms as needed.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant codes and project requirements.

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant located in Amarillo, Texas. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y‑12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities
  • The Civil Design Engineer will be responsible for developing high quality detailed design packages, providing engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and providing expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities.
  • Candidate must effectively and cooperatively work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and will routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.
  • Candidate will routinely perform walk downs in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
  • This position will require technical expertise and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field of Civil Engineering.
  • Candidate will provide self-performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes and standards.
  • Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to storm and storm drain designs and modifications, road design, soil evaluation, and oversight of outside engineering firms.
  • Must be familiar with consensus design codes. CAD drafting experience not required but preferred.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited school with a minimum of 15-20 years experience or a Masters with 14-18 years experience.
  • Requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees.
  • Must be willing to work in a production environment.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen - External applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
  • Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. If determined as such, this position would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.
