Job summary

Dennis Group Civil Engineers in Springfield, MA, is seeking a Civil Engineer student or recent graduate to join our land development and infrastructure team. This on-site role supports design tasks, bid preparation, and field coordination for food and beverage facilities.

We welcome sophomore to senior students with 0–3 years of related experience, including AutoCAD/Civil 3D usage, and travel up to 25% as needed.

Qualifications

  • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering degree.
  • GPA: 3.0 or above.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic design tasks and assist on permit applications, drawings and CAD work.
  • Perform basic procurement tasks including bid list development and bid evaluation.
  • Develop site basis of design and parking layout to satisfy regulations.
  • Analyze and design sites for institutional, industrial, and commercial buildings.
  • Coordinate with project team and prepare bid packages.

Description

Dennis Group Civil Engineers focus on the land development and infrastructure for our industrial projects that involve designing and building new food and beverage process facilities. Our Civil Engineers have strong technical and design ability and excellent communication skills in designing land development plans, building pads, infrastructure for new buildings, landscaping, and everything from the foundation and below. Civil Engineers are part of our Building Systems department and work closely with Structural Engineers and Architects/Designers. They are also involved with bid evaluation and local contractor initial contact in multiple project locations. The role is highly valuable at Dennis Group and faces engineering challenges that require strong calculation skills and for experienced engineers to have a Professional Engineer License (PE). As a member of our civil team your responsibilities may include but not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic design tasks. Assist on other tasks such as: preparation of permit applications, drawings and CAD work
  • Perform basic procurement tasks such as bid list development, contractor initial contact, bid tabulation, and preliminary bid evaluation
  • Acquire basic drawing literacy; develop an understanding of discipline specific plan elements, and how to navigate a set of drawings
  • Perform basic construction administration tasks including submittal review
  • Develop site basis of design document
  • Develop parking lot layout that satisfies development ordinances and regulations
  • Analysis and detailed design of institutional, industrial, and commercial buildings sites
  • Determine land use characteristics and assign runoff coefficients
  • Calculate times of concentrations
  • Pre-development hydrologic analysis for simple sites
  • Understand BMPs for EPSC
  • Prepare storm drainage report
  • Prepare engineering calculations and engineering sketches
  • Prepareland development plans, site grading, utility and drainage design for planning, permitting and construction for food and beverage processing facilities.
  • Review drawings and coordinate with the project team
  • Prepare bid packages and provide construction administration
  • Develop bidder list
  • Bid tabulation
  • Visit project sites to observe field conditions
  • Evaluate design constraints and resolve problems

Required Education Skills and Experience

  • Sophomore, Junior, or Senior pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering degree.
  • GPA: 3.0 or above
  • 0-3 years of experience or schooling in civil engineering tasks involving industrial construction projects (foundation and below aspects - design land development, building pads, and infrastructure for new builds, etc.)
  • 0-3 years of experience or schooling in drainage, grading and utility design for industrial or commercial projects.
  • 0-3 years of experience or schooling in AutoCAD, Civil 3D
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed (approx. 25%)

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift-up to 15 pounds at times.

Travel Requirement

  • Up to 25% travel required to visit project site and other offices.
