Job summary

Puget Sound Energy is seeking a Civil Engineer III in Western Washington to contribute to the design of civil permit and construction drawings for land development around substations. The role emphasizes civil calculations, grading, drainage, erosion control, and compliance with local regulations.

The engineer will support budgeting, cost estimates, and coordination with contractors, while upholding safety standards and enabling critical utility projects for our communities.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in engineering or PE license.
  • 5+ years of planning, design, cost estimating and scheduling as a degreed engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and modify guidelines for existing problems.
  • Prepare complex designs, standards, and analyses.
  • Provide detailed design reviews of documents.
  • Prepare cost estimates and evaluate project alternatives.
  • Plan and develop project budgets with documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with codes, standards, and design requirements.
  • Identify weaknesses and initiate corrective actions.
  • Share work to strengthen the department's engineering skills.
  • Support emergency response and restoration efforts as needed.

Job Description

As a member of the civil engineering design team at Puget Sound Energy, you will contribute to vital projects that power our communities and support the escalating demand for green energy across Western Washington, all while growing your expertise and advancing your career as a Civil Engineer III.

This position requires considerable experience developing civil permit and construction drawings for land development associated with new and existing substations. Experience with grading plans, storm drainage, erosion control, and other civil-related elements is required. A working understanding of state and local stormwater regulations, building codes, and industry standards is essential. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong experience in civil calculations, reports, technical specifications, cost estimates, and support the permitting and construction phases of projects. Communication skills—both verbal and written—are desirable. Basic understanding of electrical substation assembly and safe design practices is a plus.

The engineer should possess a broad range of experience, expertise, and/or understanding of civil and structural engineering topics related to substation design and construction. Solutions will typically involve complex issues, requiring interpretation of requirements, application of advanced analytical techniques, and non‑standard solutions. Candidates should be flexible to deal with shifting budgets and priorities, resilient to adapt to changes, and possess a positive, synergistic personality.

Upholds the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE's operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.

This job is considered "safety sensitive" as defined in RCW 49.44.240 and is subject to a pre‑employment drug screening that includes screening for the presence of marijuana and marijuana metabolites.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepares complex designs, standards, studies and analyses.
  • Provides a detailed design review of internal or external technical documents.
  • Prepares cost estimates and evaluations for project alternatives with minimal supervision.
  • Plans and develops project budgets with appropriate documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with codes, standards, and design, operation, and maintenance requirements.
  • Identifies potential areas of weakness with assigned work, and initiates corrective action.
  • Documents and shares work with others to strengthen the depth and breadth of skills within the department's engineering workforce.
  • Ensures that problem solutions are tailored to PSE's business environment.
  • Supports emergency response work as requested, including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
  • May lead or coordinate the work of junior engineers, engineering assistants, field technicians, and others who assist on specific projects (including contractor/consultants).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree or PE license in electrical, mechanical, civil or another appropriate engineering field.
  • Substantial experience in planning, design, specification preparation, technical field work, project cost estimating and scheduling (typically achieved after 5 or more years practice as a degreed engineer).
  • Demonstrated organization, documentation, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working in the utility industry.
  • Familiarity with codes and equipment utilized in the design and operation of utility systems.
  • Possession of a Professional Engineering license.
  • Knowledge of engineering economics and utility accounting practices.
  • Experience working on complex engineering projects.
Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $94,300.00–$156,900.00, and the position is eligible for annual goals‑based incentive bonuses.
