Job summary

Eversource Energy in Berlin, CT is seeking a Civil Engineer for the Substation Civil Engineering & Design Team to work on complex substations, infrastructure, and protection/system analysis, blending office and field work.

The role focuses on site infrastructure design, analysis, and coordination with engineering teams, requiring 3–5 years of civil/structural experience and an FE/PE preference. Hybrid work and solid compensation are offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program (required).
• 3-5 years of civil/structural experience (required), preferably in the electrical utility industry.
• Hold a FE license (preferred)
• Possession of a PE license (preferred)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; strong software proficiency in RISA and MathCAD; experience with AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, and related tools.

Responsibilities

• Design and analysis of substation site infrastructure, including structural steel, foundations, rigid bus, site grading, stormwater, oil containment, and site services.
• Coordinate project scopes, specifications, engineering designs, details, material ordering, and cost estimates.
• Adhere to project schedules and plan construction phases with outage durations in mind.
• Coordinate with Substation Engineering and Design to ensure safe operation and maintenance.
• Produce clear, concise written documentation and communicate effectively.
• Perform root‑cause analysis and support corrective actions.
• Review vendor submittals and participate in vendor meetings throughout design and review.
• Review construction drawings and design documentation prior to issuance to contractors.
• Ensure compliance with Eversource standards and applicable codes.
• Provide Civil Engineering support during construction, resolving field questions and approving field changes.

We have an amazing opportunity to join our Substation Civil Engineering & Design Team. The Engineer in this role will work with complex systems and equipment, while providing engineering and technical services to support our growing organization. We offer a unique and exciting opportunity to explore the best of both worlds, working both in the office and in the field on a variety of interesting projects. Areas of expertise include designing new substations and infrastructure, analyzing systems and disruptions to service, working with transformers, engineering the electrical protection and control circuits that handles the flow of power, and dealing with acceptance testing of equipment, failures of equipment and analysis of system disturbances.

In this strategic role, the Engineer is responsible for the development, expansion, and design of the system and its equipment to meet the mission and objectives of the organization. Responsible for civil, structural and site development designs and calculations for electrical substations and ensuring that the Eversource transmission and distribution systems are designed to high quality standards that provide customers with safe, reliable, competitively priced and environmentally sound electric service. This position shares accountability with peers in the strategy, development, and design of the organization’s comprehensive long-term plan for the transmission/distribution system.

The role is based in Berlin, CT

Essential Functions

• Design and analysis of substation site infrastructure for high‑voltage electrical facilities, including structural steel, foundations, rigid bus systems, site grading, stormwater management, oil containment, and substation sanitary and water services, with emphasis on structural steel, foundations, and rigid bus design.
• Assist in the development and approval of project scopes, specifications, engineering designs, details, material ordering, and cost estimates.
• Adhere to project schedules , including detailed planning of successive construction phases to effectively implement designs while accounting for outage durations and maintaining realistic timelines.
• Coordinate with Substation Engineering and Design to communicate project details and ensure all system additions, removals, and modifications are properly designed for safe operation and maintenance.
• Communicate effectively , demonstrate strong computer proficiency, and produce clear, concise written documentation.
• Perform root‑cause analysis and support the development and implementation of corrective actions.
• Review engineering vendor submittals and participate in vendor meetings to address comments and questions throughout the design and review cycle.
• Review all construction drawings and design documentation prior to issuance to construction contractors.
• Ensure all work complies with Eversource standards and applicable Codes.
• Verify the accurate design and specification of additions, modifications, and replacements to transmission and distribution systems in accordance with project schedules.
• Provide Civil Engineering support during construction , including resolving field questions and approving field‑generated changes to issued designs.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications

• Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Software proficiency: RISA (3D, Foundation, Connection) and MathCAD.
• Additional beneficial software experience: AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, L‑Pile, PLS Tower, TNX Tower, Retain Pro, and HydroCAD.

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET‑accredited program (required).

Experience:

• 3-5 years of civil/structural experience (required), preferably in the electrical utility industry.

Licenses & Certifications:

• Hold a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) license (preferred)
• Possession of a Professional Engineering (PE) license (preferred)

Working Conditions

• Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
• Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
• Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing, walking and climbing stairs are involved.
• The role will require site visits to substations. A valid driver’s license is required.

Hybrid Schedule:

Eversource supports work-life balance by offering hybrid schedules for certain roles. Eligibility is based on job responsibilities, operational needs, nature of work and team dynamics. Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. These guidelines apply to roles approved for remote work and are subject to change, based on managerial discretion and work performance. All applicants must be able to work up to five days in the office if needed (for example: emergencies, training, or other business needs) or should the policy change.
