Job summary

Wightman is seeking a Civil Engineer 1- Transportation to provide design and plan production for a variety of projects including research, planning, traffic safety, road reconstruction, and highway/bridge maintenance. The role involves complex design tasks, coordination with agencies, and preparation of specifications and reports.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's in Civil Engineering, seeks PE licensure within four years, and may have FE exam credentials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • PE license is expected within four years of employment.
  • FE exam passed is preferred for advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations in support of civil engineering design projects.
  • Assist project team in obtaining civil and environmental permits with multiple agencies.
  • Perform onsite construction observation or field verification tasks as needed.
  • Perform AutoCAD Civil 3D design/drafting in support of civil engineering design projects.
  • Coordinate with government agencies, client staff, and other professionals to obtain design information and approvals.
  • Write and edit construction specifications and engineering reports.
  • Tabulate bid items and calculate construction bid quantities from plans and specifications.

Civil Engineer 1- Transportation
Position Purpose:

The Civil Engineer 1 will provide design and plan production for a wide variety of projects which may include research, planning, traffic safety, road reconstruction and highway and bridge maintenance. The Civil Engineer will perform complex assignments exercising judgment in evaluation, selection, and modification of standard engineering techniques and procedures.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform engineering calculations in support of civil engineering design projects
  • Assist project team in obtaining civil and environmental permits with multiple agencies
  • Perform onsite construction observation or other field verification tasks as needed
  • Perform AutoCAD Civil 3D design/drafting in support of civil engineering design projects
  • Coordinate with government agencies, client staff, and other professionals to obtain design information and approvals
  • Write and edit construction specifications and engineering reports
  • Tabulate bid items and calculate construction bid quantities from plans and specifications.
Required Traits & Characteristics:
  • Ability to plan, schedule work, and complete work assignments within established budgets and timelines using discretion and judgment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team of planners, engineers, surveyors, architects, and technicians
  • Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in all work tasks
Organizational Relationships:
  • Reports Directly to Transportation Project Manager
Required Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Ability to obtain PE license within 4 years of employment
Preferred Education/Experience:
  • 0-5 years of experience in construction or civil engineering field
  • Successfully passed FE exam
Travel:
  • Position based in Allegan
  • Travel between offices for collaboration with team members and for project meetings as needed
  • Travel to job sites as needed
