Job summary

Clear's client is building large-scale compute infrastructure and seeks a civil engineer to own the civil workstream across a multi-site data center portfolio, from site screening through permitting to construction completion.

You will lead civil due diligence on greenfield and conversion sites, set grading strategies, earthwork balance and utility plans, and coordinate with structural, MEP, fiber and architectural teams. A PE license and experience with large-scale projects are highly valued.

Qualifications

• Experience leading civil workstreams on large-scale site development.
• Proven ability to manage permitting and regulatory compliance.
• Strong knowledge of grading, earthwork and stormwater design.
• Experience coordinating with multiple disciplines on multi-site campuses.
• Familiarity with NPDES/SWPPP permitting and related processes.

The data center design team

The team is working on problems such as:

• Designing and delivering tens to hundreds of gigawatts of data center capacity this decade
• Advancing the next generation of liquid cooling and electrical distribution
• Developing and scaling first of a kind modular data centers
• Shaping behind the meter designs and planning for multi gigawatt campuses

The role

• Own the civil engineering workstream across a multi-site portfolio, from site screening through permitting to construction completion.
• Lead civil due diligence on greenfield and conversion sites, covering topography, drainage, utilities, soils, floodplain and environmental constraints. Flag fatal flaws and cost risks early in site selection.
• Develop and maintain the civil basis of design, master specifications and standard drawings. Set grading strategies, earthwork balance and cut/fill sequencing for large campuses.
• Structure phased delivery, with early work packages such as mass grading, site utilities and enabling works, to shorten the critical path.
• Lead civil permitting strategy across jurisdictions, including land disturbance, NPDES/SWPPP, floodplain (CLOMR/LOMR), environmental and utility permits.
• Manage external civil consultants from schematic design through IFC and coordinate civil scope with the structural, MEP, fiber and architectural teams.

The ideal candidate

• You’ve owned civil engineering on large scale site development (data centres, industrial, logistics or power infrastructure), ideally on the owner or developer side.
• You’ve directed external civil consultants and held design deliverables to a high standard through IFC.
• You know grading, earthwork, stormwater and site utility design thoroughly, along with NPDES and floodplain (FEMA/CLOMR/LOMR) permitting.
• You’ve identified civil fatal flaws and quantified cost risk during site selection, not just carried out design after a site was chosen.
• You’ve coordinated geotechnical investigations and turned boring programs into design decisions.
• PE license
• Hyperscale or energy infrastructure development experience
• Experience with expansive clay, karst or high water table conditions
• Civil coordination on MISO or other utility interconnections
• AutoCAD Civil 3D and GIS
