Job summary

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) – Facilities Services Division in Los Angeles, CA is seeking an experienced civil engineer for on-site duties. The role involves planning, design, review, and certification of civil engineering designs for school facilities and site improvements.

You will lead technical reviews, coordinate with architects and engineers, and ensure adherence to district standards, codes, and project requirements. Travel to project sites will be required as needed.

Qualifications

  • Eight (8) years full-time paid professional experience in civil design on commercial or public agency projects, preferably educational facilities.
  • Experience in AutoCAD software design.
  • Proficiency in office computer software (Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Assist in defining and reviewing the Project Requirement Document scope of work and schedule, including interim housing requirements.
  • Perform highly complex civil engineering work related to planning, design, and construction of District facilities and site improvements; provide technical direction and certify civil engineering design plans.
  • Apply civil engineering principles to planning, design, and construction, including scope development, budget, design review, and coordination with district staff and external professionals.
  • Provide technical direction regarding site development guidelines for grading, paving, fencing, parking layouts, streets, drainage, and utilities.
  • Coordinate with consultants to obtain reviews and permits for off-site improvements; assist Real Estate with civil matters.

Location:

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) – Facilities Services Division, Los Angeles, CA – (On-Site). Candidate must be willing and able to commute to the Los Angeles, CA worksite and make project site visits as necessary.

Duties
  • Assist in defining and reviewing the Project Requirement Document scope of work and schedule, including interim housing requirements.
  • Perform highly complex civil engineering work related to the planning, design, and construction of District facilities and site improvements; provide technical direction to District personnel, commissioned architects, and consulting engineers; and certify civil engineering design plans.
  • Apply civil engineering principles, practices, processes, and procedures to the planning, design, and construction of Facilities Services Division projects, including project scope development, budget preparation, design review, and technical coordination with District and external professional staff.
  • Provide technical direction to commissioned architects and consulting civil engineers regarding District policies, standards, and design guidelines for site development, including grading, paving, fencing, parking layouts, streets, storm drainage, sewer systems, and other site improvements associated with new construction and major alterations to existing facilities and sites.
  • Provide technical direction to personnel within the Civil Engineering Unit in the preparation and review of project scope documents, topographic surveys, design drawings, specifications, and related technical documents.
  • Obtain and manage contracts and task orders for civil engineering, land surveying, and related professional services.
  • Review civil engineering plans, specifications, and related documents prepared by commissioned architects and consulting engineers for conformance with District policies, standards, design guidelines, applicable codes, and project requirements; identify conflicts with other architectural and engineering features and direct or recommend necessary revisions.
  • Develop, update, and maintain civil engineering standards, guidelines, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, safety requirements, and industry practices, and to promote quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in construction, maintenance, and operation.
  • Direct and review site development studies to determine the feasibility and estimated cost of site grading, street improvements, utility improvements, and other civil engineering requirements associated with property acquisition and development.
  • Provide technical advice and resolve civil engineering issues encountered during construction; advise contractors, commissioned architects and engineers, District construction inspectors, and other project personnel regarding civil engineering requirements and field conditions.
  • Provide professional certification of civil engineering designs and documents for assigned District and commissioned projects, as authorized by applicable professional licensing requirements.
  • Coordinate with the City of Los Angeles and civil engineering consultants to obtain review and approval of drawings and permits for off-site improvements adjacent to District school sites, including B-Permit and A-Permit work such as sidewalks, driveways, bus drop-offs, ADA curb ramps, and related improvements; coordinate permit closeout activities.
  • Assist the Real Estate Department with civil engineering matters related to property transactions, including preparation and review of legal descriptions, determination of easements, updating of parcel maps, and closure of street vacations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Experience
  • Eight (8) years full time paid professional experience in civil design on commercial or public agency projects, preferably in educational facilities
  • Experience in AutoCAD software design
  • Proficiency in office computer software (Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.)
Required Education
  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
Required Licenses and Certificates
  • A valid CA Professional Engineer license in Civil Engineering by the California State Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists
Compensation

Offered rate of compensation will be based on a variety of non-discriminatory factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and geographic location. The salary range for this position is $140,000–$149,000.
