Job summary

State of Indiana is seeking a civil/mechanical/geotechnical/structural engineer to manage diverse department projects including planning, cost estimates, and regulatory approvals.

Successful candidates will review plans, assist in design, and stay current with codes and policies while coordinating across teams and stakeholders. Travel-amenable, with Indiana PE registration preferred and strong engineering software skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Geotechnical, Structural Engineering, or related field required or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years of related technical work experience.
  • Willingness to travel; Indiana professional registration is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for current and future department projects and obtain required regulatory approvals.
  • Review plans, specifications, and studies for department projects and review submittals from contractors.
  • Assist in the design of projects owned, operated, or under maintenance by the department.
  • Stay current with engineering standards, codes, rules, and policies; contribute to legislative input.
  • Review engineering models to ensure compliance and suggest improvements.
  • Prepare and submit permits based on design criteria established by codes and regulations.
  • Prepare and provide expert testimony in hearings when needed.
  • Serve as a technical expert for field meetings, incidents, and emergencies.

About the Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA) :

IDOA centrally manages activities relating to state purchasing, the vehicle fleet, state travel, real estate leases, property disposition, and the Government Center Campus, among others. In addition to agency support, the department provides assistance to minority, women, and veteran business enterprises interested in state contracting opportunities. Through its activities, IDOA helps to ensure the smooth function of state government, finding efficient and effective solutions to government-wide needs.

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $67,314.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for current and future department projects and obtain required regulatory approvals.
  • Review plans, specifications, and studies for department projects prepared by private consulting firms and review submittals from contractors and suppliers.
  • Assist in design of projects owned, operated, or under the maintenance/repair responsibility of DNR.
  • Stay current with advances in the engineering practice, and with statutes, codes, rules, and policies, and provide input for legislative proposals.
  • Review engineering models to determine if they meet standards and make recommendations on specifications and plans.
  • Prepare and submit for permits based upon design criteria as established by relevant codes and regulations.
  • Prepare and provide expert testimony in hearings.
  • Serve as a technical expert for field meetings, incident, and emergency conditions.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Geotechnical, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of related technical work experience.
  • Be willing to travel with an appropriate accommodation.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Indiana (preferred), Engineer Intern in the State of Indiana, having passed the fundamentals of engineering examination, or as a licensed professional in Indiana with extensive experience in engineering geology, with a focus on dam and water resources projects.
  • Proficiency or the ability to quickly become skilled in various engineering software applications.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate the work of others in assigning responsibilities and coordinating engineering design work.
  • Ability to analyze a situation or problem and determine the most reliable and cost-effective solution.
  • ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with consulting engineers, governmental representatives, and contractors.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
