Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, mechanical or architectural engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Four (4) years of engineering or related experience.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, time-management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Office applications, and database applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and present effectively to diverse stakeholders and customers.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Valid driver’s license without major infractions per MBTA policy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop preliminary engineering designs, specifications and standards for modifications to MBTA facilities and systems.
  • Oversee individual projects and programs within assigned division.
  • Coordinate planning, scheduling and implementation of testing to improve reliability of facilities and components.
  • Monitor the reliability of major systems and selected components.
  • Conduct site inspections and prepare required reports.
  • Respond to inquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Drive to work sites and assist at emergencies or service disruptions as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments and teams to review projects.
  • Maintain sound union/management relations and adhere to collective bargaining agreements.

Job description

The Civil Engineer will develop engineering plans, designs, specifications, and standards for various engineering projects, and conduct studies, surveys, and cost estimates for these projects within their assigned division. This position oversees individual projects and programs, coordinates with internal departments to integrate operational needs into design,and supports the implementation of facility standards and technologies. The role requires hands‑on project management, design, design review, and field oversight.

  • Develop preliminary engineering designs, specifications, and standards for modifications to the various facilities and systems of the Authority.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of comprehensive plans for improvements and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Coordinate the planning, scheduling, and implementation of all testing performed for the purpose of improving the reliability of facilities and system components.
  • Monitor the reliability of major systems and selected components.
  • Conduct site inspections of systems and materials to verify quality and prepare required reports.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker, in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the Authority’s driven by customer service quality standard.
  • Work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Respond, directly or through others, and/or report to work for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Collaborate with other departments and team members to produce and review projects.
  • Establish and maintain sound union/management relations while upholding the rights and interests of management and adhering to collective bargaining agreements.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker, in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies, service disruptions, and/or other events as needed.
  • Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, mechanical or architectural engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Four (4) years of engineering or related experience.

Substitutions
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering or a related subject may substitute for two (2) years of general experience.
  • Massachusetts Professional Engineering (PE) license, a Registered Architect (RA) license, or a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Master's degree in engineering, architectural engineering, construction management, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in construction engineering administration/observation with a strong knowledge of means and methods.
  • Experience with transit facility construction and/or inspection.
  • Ability to work on all phases of a project from project scoping to project close-out.
  • Experience managing Projects with MS Project or Primavera P3 with resource loading within such construction schedules.
