Job summary

Chelan County seeks a Civil Deputy Prosecuting Attorney to represent the County in civil cases, provide legal advice, and handle hearings, trials, and appeals under the Prosecuting Attorney. The role involves litigation, drafting and reviewing documents, and office practice in a full-time schedule from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Qualifications

• Licensed attorney in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association.
• Strong knowledge of civil law; prior civil law experience may be weighed.

Responsibilities

• Researches legal issues, statutes, regulatory rules; drafts memoranda, opinions, documents, briefs and civil pleadings.
• May litigate bench and jury trials in the District and Superior Courts and handle appeals.
• Conducts legal research and drafts memoranda and briefs; drafts and reviews documents for County offices and employees; communicates with courts and agencies.
• Provides advice and counsel to the Board of County Commissioners and other officials; supervises under Prosecuting Attorney.
• May review tort claims and insurance matters and coordinate with risk pools or insurers.
• Comply with ethical rules and maintain a professional image.
• Attend and complete training as directed and stay current on case law and statutes.
• Work under supervision of Prosecuting Attorney or Chief Civil Deputy Prosecutor.
• Maintain reliable daily attendance as an essential function.

Salary (DOE):

PW26, Steps 2-4, $7,884.01 – $8,646.79 monthly (Longevity Steps 5-8, $9,057.02 - $10,414.92 monthly),

OR

PW29, Steps 2-4, $9,221.89 – $10,121.80 monthly (Longevity Steps 5-8, $10,605.77 - $12,207.79 monthly)

Summary

The Civil Deputy Prosecuting Attorney represents Chelan County in civil cases including hearings, trials, and appeals, and provides legal advice to Chelan County and its departments under the direction of the Prosecuting Attorney. This position involves both litigation and courtroom representation and office practice including advice, analysis and the drafting and review of documents. This position is full-time, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm daily, Monday – Friday, excluding holidays.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Researches legal issues, statutes, administrative regulations and rules; drafts memoranda, opinions, documents, briefs and civil pleadings.
• May litigate bench and jury trials in the District and Superior Courts, and be responsible for commencing, perfecting, pursuing, and responding to appeals.
• Conducts legal research and drafts memoranda and legal briefs in connection with assigned cases and for other attorneys, as required. Drafts and reviews documents, deeds, contracts, letters, options, releases, notices for County offices and employees. Communicates regularly with state and local agencies and state and federal courts and local, state and federal administrative offices.
• Provides advice and counsel to the Board of County Commissioners and their designated department heads and employees and the other County elected officials and their deputies and employees under the supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney.
• May review tort claims and insurance matters, and is expected to effectively communicate and interact with the Washington Counties Risk Pool and/or such other insurance carrier as may be employed by the County.
• Fully comply with the ethical rules and guidelines for attorneys as established by the Washington State Supreme Court. Must project a professional image.
• Attend and successfully complete training as directed by the Prosecuting Attorney or Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor, and engage in regular review to maintain a current knowledge of applicable case law and legislative enactments.
• Work under supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney or Chief Civil Deputy Prosecutor.
• Must be reliable and punctual in reporting for scheduled work; daily attendance is an essential function of the job.

Qualifications / Education / Experience

• Must be a licensed attorney in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association.
• Requires a full knowledge of civil law and related Washington statutes. Prior work experience in civil law is not a requirement, but such experience will be highly weighed.
• Must successfully pass a background check investigation.
• Must be a United States citizen.
• Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license.
• Computer keyboard proficiency.
• English language proficiency, both oral and written.
