Job summary

Saiia Construction Company LLC is seeking a Civil CAD Technician in Birmingham, AL to support the civil construction and preconstruction teams with accurate drawings, terrain models, and surface analysis.

You will create and modify construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D, collaborate across teams, and contribute to proposals, while maintaining strict quality controls and timely delivery. This full-time role may require site visits and travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

• Draft plans and schematics using AutoCAD Civil 3D to support project pursuits.
• Model surfaces and revise drawings for planning on large sites.
• Prepare quantity take-offs and reports for estimates and baselines.
• Support proposals with schematics and marketing materials.
• Assist in producing DTMs from drone/survey data.
• Collaborate with PMs, estimators and engineers to meet requirements.
• Perform quality checks to ensure drawings reflect reference data and site conditions.
• Maintain organized document management for drawings and related files.
• Prepare drafts for review and revisions with project leads.
• Contribute to value engineering by proposing design improvements.
• Help meet deadlines by managing time and resources efficiently.

Saiia Construction Company LLC, a MasTec company, is currently hiring for a Civil CAD Technician to be located in Birmingham, AL. The Civil CAD Technician is responsible for, but not limited to the support of the construction and preconstruction teams by creating, modifying, and managing construction drawings, topographical profiles, and 3D-surfaces used in the planning and construction of civil engineering projects.

Responsibilities

• Drafting: Create plans and schematics to support project pursuits or ongoing projects using AutoCAD / AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
• Surface Modeling: Modify and revise existing drawings as needed to produce interim work surfaces to support sequencing and planning of work activities across large project sites.
• Quantity Survey: Prepare initial quantity take-offs for estimates and project baselines and progressive quantity reports to support recurring payments certificates using a combination of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business center software.
• Proposal Support: Prepare schematics to support project pursuits and to develop marketing material.
• Prepare DTM: Assist drone / survey technician in processing raw point clouds to produce Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and topographical plans.
• Coordinate with Team Members: Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and engineers to understand project requirements and support planning efforts.
• Review and Quality Assurance: Conduct quality control checks to ensure that drawings and surfaces are accurate and true representations of reference data and site conditions.
• Document Management: Maintain and organize a comprehensive filing system for drawings, schematics, and related documents, ensuring all proposal and project documentation is easily accessible and up-to-date.
• Prepare Drafts for Approval: Prepare and present drafts to project leads and stakeholders for review and approval, incorporating feedback and revisions as necessary.
• Value Engineering: Work with construction / preconstruction teams to develop solutions to technical problems and suggest improvements to existing designs.
• Support Project Timelines: Assist in meeting proposal and project deadlines by maintaining a steady workflow and efficiently managing time and resources.
• Technology and Tool Management: Stay up-to-date with the latest AutoCAD updates and drafting tools to enhance efficiency and productivity in creating designs.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including 2D and 3D drafting, Trimble Business Center, and Microsoft Excel.
• Knowledge of drafting techniques, engineering standards, and map projections.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work.
• Ability to effectively communicate with team members, engineers, and clients.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
• Capable of identifying issues with designs and proposing solutions to resolve them.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• This position does not have supervisory responsibility.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Diploma, or Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
• 4+ years of experience working as an CAD Operator or in a similar design/drafting role, with required experience in civil construction or civil engineering.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Full-time, office-based position.
• May require occasional site visits for project coordination or measurements.
• Occasional overtime may be required based on project deadlines.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Must have and maintain a valid state issued Driver’s License with driving record that meets Saiia’s risk management guidelines.

TRAVEL

• This position travels to various site locations. Estimated travel requirement 25% of time.
