About the City

The city of Stamford (pop. 3,000) is recruiting for a City Manager to lead this self-contained community, just 40 miles north of Abilene, Texas as it embarks on an exciting time from attracting national retailers, renewable energy sectors and well on its way with a $10 million goal for renovating and reenergizing its 100+ year old Carnegie Library. The city is fortunate to have an extremely affordable housing stock and one of the top public schools in the State of Texas. The school district boasts ratings with A’s and B’s in various categories recently released by the State, along with a perennial district favorite in both boys and girls athletic programs, and a student to teacher ratio of 12:1. The City is sound financially and politically. The most recent elections were cancelled as a testament to a strong and stable political environment and a conservative, yet realistic approach to service delivery. The previous manager retired after 14 years, and an City Manager has been leading the organization for the past year.

Position Summary and Qualifications

The city is desiring a public sector professional with a minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience, with prior experience as a City Manager desired. The successful candidate may have also served as an Assistant City Manager or department head in a larger city. He/She will have a strong understanding of financial operations and a working knowledge of grants, along with a keen understanding of public works operations…all of this is necessary to address an aging infrastructure. Further experience in development related issues as the city prepares for new and increased development of which will include retail, industrial and housing as this new chapter for Stamford and West Texas emerges. The successful candidate will be a hands on manager with a servants heart that is willing to delegate to direct reports and serve as a coach, mentor and true educator of staff development. The staff is primed for this type of inclusionary and visionary leader.

Compensation and Benefits

The position will have a base salary of around $100,000 per year with excellent health insurance, leave benefits and TMRS at 6% with a 2 to 1 match. Further, the city council is willing to consider providing housing to the successful candidate, as well as other negotiated benefits such as housing relocation, car allowance, etc.
