The City of Athens is seeking a qualified individual to manage the city’s engineering functions. This role involves providing professional engineering support for various city projects while ensuring compliance with existing standards.
Ideal candidates will have a BS degree related to engineering, certification as a Professional Engineer, and a valid Alabama Driver’s license. Responsibilities include coordinating projects, preparing technical documents, and overseeing compliance with regulations.
This position is responsible for managing the city’s engineering functions and for providing professional engineering support for a variety of city projects.
The work consists of varied engineering, inspection, and project management duties. The need to balance a variety of competing interests and priorities contributes to the complexity of the work. The purpose of this position is to perform engineering duties in support of design and construction of city infrastructure and improvement projects. Successful performance contributes to a safe, well‑maintained, and efficient city infrastructure.
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation. Must be willing to work non‑standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary. Must be willing to be on‑call.
