Job description

Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences(CIRES) at CU Boulder encourages applicationsfor a Postdoctoral Associate within NOAA’s Chemical Sciences Laboratory(CSL) in Boulder,Colorado. The successful candidate will work in the TroposphericChemistry program alongside a number of federal and universityemployees engaged in research investigating trace gases andaerosols and their impacts on air quality and climate. Our groupdevelops and uses world-class instrumentation to measure thesespecies and deploys these instruments on aircraft and at fieldsites.

The successful candidate for this position will investigate theemissions and atmospheric chemistry of trace gases and theiroxidation products, with a particular focus on gas-phase reactivechlorine species, including chloramines (NH2Cl, NHCl2, NCl3), andtheir contribution to urban Cl-atom production. The PostdoctoralAssociate in this role will retrieve and analyze chloramine andrelated halogen measurements from recent NOAA CSL ground, mobilelaboratory, and aircraft field campaigns (e.g., SUNVEx, AEROMMA,and USOS), develop and apply calibration methods for the iodidechemical ionization mass spectrometer I-CIMS), and collaborate closely with university partners on the analysisof these data. The selected candidate will use these data for thedevelopment of chemical mechanisms and models, as well asassessment of the air quality and climate impacts of emissions andatmospheric chemical cycles. The selected individual will work withhigh-resolution, time-of-flight chemical ionization massspectrometers within the Tropospheric Chemistry instrumentsuite. Individuals without a mass spectrometry background, butwith relevant experimental experience, are strongly encouraged toapply. CSL has a collaborative lab culture, and we are looking fora candidate who actively subscribes to this philosophy.

CU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with allapplicable federal, state, and local laws governingnondiscrimination in employment. We are committed to creating aworkplace where all individuals are treated with respect anddignity, and we encourage individuals from all backgrounds toapply, including protected veterans and individuals withdisabilities.

Who We Are

CIRES is aninternationally recognized leader in innovative environmentalscience and research and is located at the University of ColoradoBoulder. At CIRES, more than 900 environmental scienceprofessionals work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES haspartnered with NOAA since 1967, and our areas of expertise includeweather and climate, changes at Earth’s poles, air quality andatmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, andmore. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainablefuture environment by advancing scientific and societalunderstanding of the Earth system.

The mission of the NOAA ChemicalSciences Laboratory (CSL) is to advance scientificunderstanding of the chemical and physical processes that affectEarth’s atmospheric composition. CSL’s vision is a nation that hasthe needed scientific understanding and information aboutatmospheric composition to make optimal decisions for thewell-being of current and future generations.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
