Job summary

Door County is seeking a Circulation Assistant to support public access to library resources. You will handle circulation transactions, assist patrons with equipment, and ensure accurate data entry in line with library policies.

This role involves shelving, customer service, and clerical duties across library branches, with evening and weekend shifts. Applicants should have a high school diploma and at least one year of PC experience.

Qualifications

  • Ability to learn and operate library-specific software systems.
  • Working knowledge of tablets, e-reading and mobile devices, with the ability to explain and support their use.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Process checkout and return of library materials using the circulation software.
  • Provide basic support to patrons using equipment (photocopiers, microfilm readers, computers, audiovisual gear, e-readers, mobile devices).
  • Receive payment for overdue charges and issue receipts.
  • Answer incoming calls and route inquiries to staff.
  • Issue and update library cards by verifying patron information and data entry.
  • Maintain operations during shifts and enforce library policies; escalate as needed.
  • Sort, shelve, retrieve, and organize library materials per classification systems.
  • Perform clerical tasks (alphabetizing, filing, updating service logs).
  • Retrieve library materials to fulfill patron or staff requests.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.

Job Summary

The Circulation Assistant supports public access to library resources by performing routine clerical, customer service, and technical support tasks at library branches. This role contributes to the efficiency and welcoming atmosphere of the library through circulation services, user assistance, shelving, and ensures accurate data entry and recordkeeping in alignment with library policy and procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Processes the checkout and return of library materials using the circulation software.
  • Provides basic support to patrons using equipment such as photocopiers, microfilm readers, desktop computers, audiovisual equipment, e-readers, and mobile devices; demonstrates usage as needed.
  • Receives payment for overdue charges and damaged materials and issues receipts.
  • Answers incoming calls, provides information, and routes inquiries to appropriate staff members.
  • Issues and updates library cards by verifying patron information and accurately entering data into the system.
  • Maintains library operations during assigned shifts, which may include working independently as the sole staff member on-site; monitors the facility, enforces library policies, addresses routine issues, and refers non-routine or escalated matters to supervisory staff.
  • Maintains library collections by sorting, shelving, retrieving, and organizing materials in accordance with classification systems and established procedures.
  • Performs clerical tasks such as alphabetizing, filing circulation or registration records, and updating service logs.
  • Retrieves library materials to fulfill patron or staff requests.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally in both written and verbal interactions with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.

Required Education & Experience

  • Valid drivers license.
Preferred Education & Experience
  • At least one (1) year of experience working in a customer service or public-facing role.
  • Previous experience in a library or similar public service setting.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Work is performed primarily in a public library setting with frequent interaction with the public. The position requires nearly continuous standing and walking, as well as frequent bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, handling, and repetitive motions. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 40 lbs. and to push/pull objects weighing up to 40 lbs. of force on an intermittent basis throughout the shift. Tasks also involve reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, using vision, speaking, and hearing. Visual acuity and auditory capacity are necessary to assist patrons and perform detailed tasks. The work environment is generally quiet with minimal exposure to dust, noise, or temperature fluctuations. Shifts include evening and weekend hours.

Travel between branches or offsite work can be required.
