Job summary

Faith Lutheran Church in Tennessee is seeking an organist or pianist to provide musical accompaniment for worship services and church programs. You will play hymns and liturgy, and accompany the choir and soloists during rehearsals and services.

The role requires proficiency in organ and/or piano, strong sight-reading and familiarity with Lutheran liturgy. You will schedule rehearsals, coordinate with the senior pastor and choir director, and arrange substitutes as needed.

Job description

Position: Church Organist or Pianist

Accountable to: Senior pastor

Purpose: To serve the church by providing appropriate musical accompaniment during worship services and other church programs.

Compensation: $130 per service; $130 per weekday choir rehearsal.

Qualifications

• 1. Proficiency in organ and/or piano (organ has a coupler setting if needed);
• 2. Confidence in playing for congregational singing in hymnody and liturgy, as well as choir accompaniment;
• 3. Strong sight reader; and
• 4. Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, the Lutheran liturgy in Lutheran Service Book.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. 1. Play selected hymns and liturgy from Lutheran Service Book (CPH, 2006) for worship services to accompany congregational singing.
   • a) Liturgy settings include:
   • i. Divine Service Setting I;
   • ii. Devine Service Setting III;
   • iii. Matins; and
   • iv. Evening Prayer.
   • b) Worship services include:
   • i. Sunday morning at 10:30am
   • ii. Wednesday evening at 6:15pm in the seasons of Advent and Lent
   • iii. Funerals and weddings (if requested and available)
   • iv. Occasional services throughout the year
2. 2. Accompany choir and soloists during rehearsals, worship services and other programs during the choir season (September through May). Choir rehearsals are:
   • a) Thursday evenings at 6:30pm (this can be flexible based on the accompanist’s availability)
   • b) Sunday mornings at 10:15am
3. 3. Arrange for a substitute when not able to be present.
4. 4. Work with senior pastor and choir director for other appropriate music-related needs.

Additional Expectations

1. 1. Follow the direction of the choir director at rehearsals.
2. 2. Meet with the choir director and pastor once per month during the choir season to check in.
3. 3. Prepare pieces selected by the choir director prior to rehearsal.
