Custodian

Location: Unity Minneapolis Church

Job Overview:

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented custodianto join our team and maintain the cleanliness and safety of our newly renovated facility. As custodian, you will be responsible for performing cleaning and maintenance duties in various areas within the building and grounds, ensuring a clean, safe, and orderly environment for staff, congregants and guests of all ages. The ideal candidate will be hardworking, proactive, and take pride in their work.Paid time off and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in hallways, lobbies, restrooms, offices, and other common areas.
    • Clean windows, window blinds, walls, vents, and doors.
    • Sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper).
    • Empty trash, recycling, and organics recycling cans and place into outdoor collection bins.
    • Clean and disinfect high-touch areas such as light switches, door handles, and elevator.
    • Maintain custodial supply inventory and order supplies when running low.
    • Establish a monthly & quarterly cleaning routine.
    • Maintain cleanliness of exterior grounds, including seasonal impacts on lawn, sidewalks and parking lots.
  • Facility Support:
    • Set up tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings, events, or special activities. Return items to storage after meetings.
    • Manage basic maintenance: replace light bulbs, clean outdoor air conditioners, monitor thermostats, and replace furnace filters, etc.
    • Ensure that building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical) function properly and report any issues to the Executive Director.
    • Establish a quarterly building maintenance routine.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Follow safety guidelines and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
    • Ensure the cleanliness and safety of work areas to avoid accidents.
    • Follow established cleaning protocols to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Attend weekly staff meetings and periodic check-in meetings with Executive Director.
    • Work closely with church’s volunteer Maintenance Team and report any facility-related issues to Executive Director.
    • Assist with special projects or additional duties as assigned by Executive Director or Senior Minister.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial or janitorial experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and safety procedures.
  • Basic familiarity using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to problem solve with basic “handy person” skills for maintenance needs.
  • Good communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual and self-motivated.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and also periodic lifting up to 50 lbs. without hindrance.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and bend for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate cleaning & maintenance equipment (vacuum, weed whip, etc.).
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain church buildings & grounds in a high state of repair and cleanliness.

Working Conditions:

  • Part-time position: 20-22 hours weekly
  • Hours may vary based on facility needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Will work indoors and outdoors, with exposure to cleaning chemicals and physical labor.
  • Newly renovated church building with a new construction addition.
