City of Charlottesville is seeking an individual to plan, instruct, and supervise specialized Children's Group Fitness classes and wellness activities for participants ages 1-17.
The instructor leads engaging, age-appropriate exercise experiences, educates participants on fitness and safety principles, and promotes proper movement techniques in a positive, safe environment focused on wellness and meaningful play.
The hiring amount is between $25.00 and $36.00 an hour. Offer is dependent on qualifications and internal equity. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.
This position is responsible for planning, instructing, and supervising specialized Children's Group Fitness classes and wellness activities for participants ages 1-17. The instructor leads engaging, age-appropriate exercise experiences, educates participants on fitness and safety principles, and promotes proper movement techniques while fostering a positive, safe, and supportive environment focused on wellness and meaningful play. This position requires unique skills, abilities, and/or experience and may require one or more types of certification. Primarily and most frequently, work is performed under direct supervision within one functional area and of a routine nature. Reports to the General Recreation Program Manager.
Schedule is contingent upon program needs and candidate availability. The department is currently seeking candidates with availability between 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Anticipated hours are approximately 10-15 hours per week.
Thorough knowledge of professional behavior in a recreation environment; ability to maintain order among participants; ability to instruct participants with different learning styles; ability to demonstrate positive customer service skills when communicating with participants, parents and staff; strong safety orientation; ability to think independently and develop routines for teaching specific classes.
Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights and/or holidays.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
Dependent upon assignment, a majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens and/or infectious bacteria. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
