Job summary

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a part-time Childbirth Educator, RN, to provide prenatal education to expectant parents in a structured classroom setting and occasional one-to-one sessions. The role requires clinical background in labor and delivery and the ability to adapt to group dynamics to deliver an optimal education experience.

Ideal candidates hold IL RN licensure with BLS instructor certification, plus 1–2 years of group teaching experience and a BSN; certification as a childbirth

Responsibilities

• Provide childbirth preparation and prenatal education to expectant couples in classroom settings.
• Update curriculum with evolving clinical practice guidelines in collaboration with department leadership.
• Assess learning needs and tailor instruction to group needs; evaluate teaching effectiveness.
• Utilize empowerment model to promote positive health decisions and self-management.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate women’s health programs with NMH staff.
• Complete special projects as assigned.

Job Description

TheChildbirth Educator, RN reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide prenatal education to expectant parents. This will primarily be done in a formal, structured group, or classroom setting, but many also be conducted in a one-to one less formal interaction. This position requires a high-level individual with excellent presentation skills, a clinical background in labor and delivery as well as other maternal/newborn areas, and the fluidity and savvy to assess and monitor the culture and tone of each class, responding seamlessly to changing group dynamics to provide the optimal education experience.

Responsibilities:

• Provides childbirth preparation and other related prenatal education to expectant couples in a classroom setting, via the Great Expectations or Great Expectations Refresher curriculum.
• Works with department leadership team to review and update class curriculum to reflect changing clinical practice recommendations.
• Identifies learning needs and provides individualized instruction based on the needs of the group. Evaluates the effectiveness of the teaching intervention and adjusts the teaching accordingly.
• Utilizes and projects an empowerment model that fosters positive health decision making and self-management of diseases and conditions.
• In collaboration with other department colleagues and NMH staff, assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating women’s health programs for the community.
• Special projects as identified or assigned.

Qualifications

Certification:

Registered nurse through IL dept of Professional Regulation Certification in one or more major education specialties, such as BLS instructor per AHAORcertified childbirth educator through ICEA, PCE, Lamaze, etc.

BSN; 1-2 years group teaching experience; at least one year of labor and delivery staff

Experience:

RN experience or postpartum nursing experience, depending on area of program focus for the department

Preferred:

• RN specialty certification in a maternal/child clinical area
