Job summary

ReNEW Schools in Indianapolis seeks a Child Nutrition Assistant Manager to support the Kitchen Leadership Team and oversee daily operations across campus meals.

The role requires 2–5 years in foodservice, strong communication, and the ability to supervise staff, manage inventory, and ensure compliance with safety standards. This on-site position supports meal service, training, and customer service within a school nutrition program.

Qualifications

• 2-5 years of foodservice experience required.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Associates or Bachelor's in Food Service Management, Nutrition or Culinary Arts preferred.
• ServSafe certification preferred.
• Approved background check.
• Excellent verbal and written communication to interact with parents, admins, staff, and agencies.
• Reliable transportation during working hours; travel between schools is required.
• Highly organized and detail oriented.
• Experience with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Follow all federal, state, and local requirements for Child Nutrition programs, incl. National School Lunch and School Breakfast.
• Assist with the preparation and service of high-quality, appealing meals while ensuring proper portions and meal pattern compliance.
• Ensure staff comply with food safety and sanitation requirements.
• Assist Manager with ordering quantities of food and supplies based on menus, participation, and needs.
• Receive and inspect food and supplies deliveries for quality and specifications.
• Notify Manager of shortages, substitutions, or delivery discrepancies.
• Assist with proper storage, rotation, inventory control, and authorized use of food and supplies.
• Assist with and complete required inventories of food and supplies.
• Perform cashiering, meal counting, money handling, and day-end procedures as assigned.
• Assist with daily supervision and direction of Child Nutrition staff and lead in Manager’s absence.
• Maintain production records, food safety docs, reports, and other program records.
• Follow cost-control procedures to minimize waste and operating costs.
• Support efforts to increase meal participation through customer service, merchandising, and cafeteria environment.
• Complete annual training and attend meetings as assigned.
• Maintain a clean, organized, safe kitchen and serving area.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Manager, Assistant Director, or Director.

JOB GOAL

The Child Nutrition Assistant Manager will perform a wide variety of duties under the supervision of the Manager. The role of an Assistant Manager is to support the Leadership Team and ensure efficient kitchen operations. The Assistant Manager will work closely with staff in regards to food preparation, quality and training. The Assistant Manager will also be a positive representative on the Leadership Team for the Child Nutrition Department.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Duties may include but are not limited:

1. Follow all federal, state, and local requirements for Child Nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.
2. Assist with the preparation and service of high-quality, appealing meals while ensuring proper portions and meal pattern requirements are followed.
3. Follow and help ensure staff compliance with all food safety and sanitation requirements.
4. Assist the Manager with ordering appropriate quantities of food and supplies based on menus, participation, and operational needs.
5. Receive and inspect food and supply deliveries for accuracy, quality, and compliance with specifications.
6. Notify the Manager of shortages, substitutions, damaged products, or delivery discrepancies.
7. Assist with proper storage, rotation, inventory control, and authorized use of food and supplies.
8. Assist with and complete required inventories of food and supplies.
9. Accurately perform cashiering, meal counting, money handling, and day-end procedures as assigned.
10. Assist with the daily supervision and direction of Child Nutrition staff and assume leadership responsibilities in the Manager’s absence.
11. Complete and maintain required production records, food safety documentation, reports, and other program records.
12. Follow cost-control procedures to minimize food waste, control operating costs, and use department resources responsibly.
13. Support efforts to increase meal participation through excellent customer service, merchandising, promotions, and an inviting cafeteria environment.
14. Complete all required annual training and continuing education and attend meetings and trainings as assigned.
15. Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and efficient kitchen and serving environment.
16. Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 40 pounds.
17. Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Manager, Assistant Director, or Director of Child Nutrition.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 2-5 Years Foodservice experience required
• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Food Service Management, Nutrition or Culinary Arts preferred

• Access to reliable transportation during working hours, travel is required between schools
