Responsibilities

  • Assess the individual needs of children and families and develop developmentally and therapeutically appropriate activities.
  • Facilitate play, educational, and coping activities to help children adjust to the hospital environment.
  • Monitor children's responses and modify activities or interventions as needed.
  • Document child life assessments, observations, recommendations, and progress in the medical record.
  • Orient and supervise volunteers who provide ongoing play and developmental activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in marketing, public relations, and community-based programs related to children's health.
  • Support research initiatives and the implementation of evidence-based child life practices.
  • Maintain current clinical and professional knowledge through continuing education, professional literature, conferences, workshops, and networking with other child life programs.
  • Exercise independent judgment when addressing non-routine problems while working under general supervision.
  • Interact directly with patients, families, customers, and internal healthcare staff both in person and by telephone.

Job Summary

The Child Life Specialist is an integral member of the healthcare team responsible for supporting the developmental, emotional, and psychosocial needs of hospitalized children and their families. The specialist plans, implements, and evaluates developmentally appropriate programs and activities designed to help children and families cope effectively with the hospital environment and healthcare experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Required QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Child Development, or a related field.
  • Completion of a 600-hour Child Life internship or fellowship.
Experience
  • 0–1 year of experience in child development.
  • Healthcare experience is preferred.
  • Candidates may qualify with one year of work experience as a Child Life Specialist, or completion of the required 600-hour internship and eligibility to sit for the certification examination.
