Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of early childhood education related duties. Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Participates with the Child Care Specialist in planning and implementing the educational program for a group of children ages two (2) months to five (5) years of age.
- Participates in developing curriculum plans and identifying instructional materials that focus on individual instructional activities.
- Participates in providing age-appropriate language arts, social studies, cognitive arts, computers, science, art, music and physical development educational experiences for children in the group.
- Participates in in-service education meetings and conferences provided for the Center staff.
- Implements educational program for children during hours the Child Care Specialist is not on duty.
- Participates in evaluation and planning sessions with supervisory and/or Center staff.
- Assures that safety precautions are adhered to.
- Supervises and interacts with the children in the classroom and on the playground.
- Completes State and Center paperwork as assigned by the Child Care Specialist.
- Follows and carries out all State, District and Center policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Possession of a valid Child Development Associate Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)
- Possession of valid certification in Pediatric CPR and First Aid

- Principles and practices of early childhood education and child development for children from infancy through five years of age.
- Child growth and development, including the physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development of young children.
- Age-appropriate curriculum, instructional activities, materials, and learning environments for infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children.
- Strategies for supporting individual children's developmental needs, interests, abilities, and learning styles.
- Positive guidance and behavior management techniques appropriate for young children.
- Principles and practices for creating safe, healthy, inclusive, and nurturing learning environments.
- Basic child observation and documentation techniques used to support curriculum planning and assessment.
- Health, safety, sanitation, emergency, and supervision practices applicable to early childhood programs.
- Principles and practices for communicating and working effectively with children, families, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures governing child care and development programs.
Ability to:
- Assist in planning and implementing developmentally appropriate educational experiences for children from two months through five years of age.
- Provide a variety of age-appropriate learning activities that support children's language, cognitive, social-emotional, physical, creative, and other areas of development.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to individual children's developmental needs, abilities, interests, and behaviors.
- Establish and maintain a safe, supportive, inclusive, and engaging classroom and playground environment.
- Supervise children consistently and effectively while maintaining awareness of their safety and well-being.
- Use positive guidance and behavior management strategies appropriate to the age and developmental level of children.
- Assist with selecting, preparing, organizing, and using instructional materials and classroom learning environments.
- Implement established educational activities and program plans independently when the Child Care Specialist is not present.
- Observe children and communicate relevant developmental, behavioral, health, safety, or other concerns to the appropriate staff.
- Follow established health, safety, emergency, supervision, and child-care procedures.
- Maintain accurate and timely records, forms, and other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with children, families, coworkers, supervisors, and other members of the college community.
- Work cooperatively as a member of a child care center team and participate constructively in planning, evaluation, staff meetings, training, and professional development activities.
- Exercise sound judgment and discretion in responding to children's needs and classroom situations.
- Maintain confidentiality of information concerning children and families.
- Adapt to changing classroom needs, schedules, activities, and staffing assignments.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for children and families from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, linguistic, disability, and other backgrounds.
- Understand and follow applicable federal, state, District, and Center policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines.
