Job summary

A major hospital system in New York is seeking an experienced Cytotechnologist to lead Cytology operations within the Anatomic Pathology laboratory.   • Graduate of an accredited Cytology program and/or ASCP registry.
  • Minimum 3 years of screening gynecological and non‑gynecological specimens.
  • FNA procedures experience required; Bethesda System familiarity required.
  • Lead, supervisory or chief technologist experience preferred; regulatory compliance experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily Cytology operations and testing activities.
  • Screen gynecological and non-gynecological specimens and FNA cases.
  • Collaborate with Pathologists on case review and sign-out procedures.
  • Ensure CAP and NYSDOH regulatory compliance and maintain SOPs.
  • Prepare QA/QC reports and coordinate staffing, scheduling, and evaluations.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and staff development initiatives.
  • Manage inventory, supplies, and equipment readiness; drive process improvements.
  • Maintain continuing education and competency records for Cytology staff.

Role Overview

This role combines technical expertise, quality oversight, staff leadership, and regulatory compliance to ensure the delivery of accurate and timely cytology diagnostic services. The ideal candidate is an experienced Cytotechnologist with a strong background in gynecological and non-gynecological specimen screening, quality assurance, and laboratory operations.

  • Lead daily Cytology operations and ensure efficient workflow management
  • Oversee quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and laboratory standards
  • Supervise Cytotechnologists and coordinate staffing coverage
  • Screen and evaluate gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens
  • Partner with Pathologists on case review, sign-out, and diagnostic services
  • Maintain departmental policies, procedures, and competency programs
  • Manage inventory, supplies, and operational effectiveness
  • Serve as a key resource for Cytology staff, laboratory leadership, and Pathologists
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily Cytology laboratory operations and testing activities
  • Screen gynecological and non-gynecological specimens and fine needle aspiration cases
  • Collaborate with Pathologists on case review and sign-out procedures
  • Ensure compliance with CAP, NYSDOH, and other regulatory requirements
  • Maintain and update Cytology policies, procedures, and SOPs
  • Prepare and submit quality assurance and quality control reports
  • Coordinate staff scheduling, competency assessments, and performance evaluationsAssist with hiring, onboarding, and staff development initiatives
  • Support Cytology aspiration procedures across multiple clinical departments
  • Manage laboratory inventory, supplies, and equipment readiness
  • Maintain continuing education and competency records for Cytology staff
  • Participate in departmental projects and process improvement initiatives
RequirementsEducation
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Graduate of an accredited Cytology program and/or ASCP registry required
Experience
  • Minimum 3 years of experience screening gynecological and non-gynecological specimens required
  • Experience with fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures required
  • Familiarity with Bethesda System for Cytology Reporting required
  • Previous lead, supervisory, or chief technologist experience preferred
  • Experience with quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and competency management preferred
Licenses & Certifications
  • New York State Cytotechnologist License required
  • ThinPrep Certification required
  • ASCP Certification required if no certified Cytology school degree
