Job Summary

The practice of a physician assistant shall include medical services within the education, training and experience of the physician assistant that are delegated by the supervising physician.

Medical services rendered by physician assistants may include, but are not limited to, obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations; ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating a diagnosis; developing and implementing a treatment plan; monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; assisting at surgery; offering counseling and education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals. Physician Assistants, in an emergency, shall be authorized to treat any medical disease and/or perform any medical and surgical procedures at the hospital for affiliates. An emergency, for these purposes, is defined as a situation in which any delay in administering treatment would result in serious harm to the patient or an immediate threat to life of the patient and the patient's private physician is not immediately available.

In addition, Chief PAs responsibilities include interviewing and training new PAs; general supervision of PAs, assisting in reviewing performance and determining merit raises for PAs; assisting in the discipline of PAs, preparing work schedules and general supervision for PAs; assisting with payroll; assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures; liaison between department staff; nursing units, referring physicians, house staff officers and secretarial staff; assists with administrative issues for all department PAs, participate in leadership activities and training.

Further responsibilities may include overseeing completion and submission of routine and special reports, oversee various research protocols; data preparation for departmental studies and/or projects.

The activities listed above may be performed in any setting authorized by the supervising physician, including but not limited to, clinics, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, patient homes, nursing homes and other institution settings.

In addition to the Core Skills listed here, the Chief PA will request validation to perform department specific skills.

Essential Functions
  • Provide oversight of all administrative aspects of the PAs including team leadership. Must ensure adequate scheduling of; must submit payroll and assist in management of PA budget; must participate in preparedness for all regulations and standards as required by bodies such as JCAHO and NYS DOH
  • Schedule is managed appropriately to provide adequate coverage. Ensure all performance standards are met and improved upon.
  • Adequate coverage is provided. All standards and regulations are met; budget is developed and well managed. Payroll is submitted in a timely fashion.
  • Ensures that the table of organization for PAs is filled through recruitment and hiring of PAs; ensures that competencies are developed and met; ensures timely and regular evaluation of PAs; disciplines up to firing when necessary. Training of new PAs.
  • Ensure adequate PA staffing. ID and correct weaknesses of PAs through objective criteria.
  • Adequate PA staffing, competencies measured timely, evaluations done as required.
  • Participates with the medical director of the PAs in developing a curriculum for PAs; keeps current with respect to new technologies, techniques, or patient management strategies; sets up and supervises procedural and/or patient care training and teaching: participates in the formal didactics for the PA education.
  • Ensure educational excellence of current and new PAs. ID and correct weaknesses of PAs through objective criteria.
  • Developed curriculum, inservice and training and by the progress and development of PA competencies to meet the clinical needs of the program.
  • In collaboration with the Attending Physician and other health care providers, coordinates the care of the patient.
  • The plan of care is communicated with all members of the health care team.
  • Appropriate care is provided as per standard of care.
  • The PA monitors variances of the plan of care and initiates appropriate intervention to amend identified variances.
  • Performs emergency. lifesaving procedures in the presence of life threatening situations such as: cardiac arrest, massive hemorrhage or similar problems. Technical skills include but are not limited to, providing basic life support and advanced life support.
  • Appropriately follows life saving protocols.
  • Competency is assessed either by certifying body and/or supervising colleague.
  • Performs procedures that may include insertion and removal of: arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, Swann‑Ganz catheters, intra aortic balloons, temporary pacemaker wires, renal dialysis catheters, thoracentesis, paracentesis, arthrocentesis and lumbar puncture. In addition performs venipuncture and cardiopuncture.
  • Appropriately performs special procedures.
  • Competency is assessed either by certifying body and/or supervising colleague.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills to problem solve and initiate clinical decision making.
  • Assess patient's clinical status and attempts satisfactory resolution of patient's clinical issues.
  • Appropriate actions are taken.
  • Participates in a team approach to health care, by acting as a liaison between members of the primary care team;
  • Maintains communication with the interdisciplinary team through frequent interactions and participation in staff conferences.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies. Ensure delivery of high quality patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with all JACHO regulations.
  • Coordinate billing of all services provided by PA's.
  • Receipt of maximum revenue from PA services provided.
  • Prepare and communicate North Division PA schedule.
  • Ensure PA coverage 24/7.
  • Responsible for hiring. firing discipline and evaluation of PA's.
  • Communicates effectively with members of the health care team and the patient and involved others.
  • Establishes collaborative and collegial relationships with health care members.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic procedures and examinations.
  • Appropriate orders are completed and interpretations made.
  • Observes the patient for the desired response.
  • Prescribes medications for the patient.
  • Educates the patient about the pharmacologic intervention.
  • Observes the patient for the desired response.
  • Performs and records a complete patient history and physical examination.
  • Appropriate care is provided as per standard of care.
  • Performs related duties as necessary.
  • Presentation at meetings as appropriate.
  • Participation in Departmental activities.
  • Presence at appropriate meetings.
