Job description

Chief Nursing Officer
NYC Health and Hospitals-Woodhull Medical Center

Brooklyn, NY

The Opportunity:

Woodhull Medical Center seeks an accomplished, visible and highly collaborative Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to lead the next chapter of nursing excellence. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the CNO will join a cohesive senior leadership team and serve as the hospital's senior executive for nursing practice, patient care delivery and the nursing workforce.

This is a significant transformation opportunity for an experienced nursing executive who is energized by complex urban health care, a public-sector environment and a deeply mission-driven workforce. The successful candidate will strengthen nursing practice, build a high-performing leadership structure, deepen engagement across a workforce that includes both newer and long-tenured nurses, and create a culture in which accountability, professional development and respect reinforce one another.

The Position:

The Chief Nursing Officer provides strategic, operational and professional leadership for nursing and related patient care services across Woodhull Medical Center. The CNO is accountable for the quality and consistency of nursing practice, workforce strategy, clinical outcomes, regulatory readiness, resource stewardship and the development of nursing leaders at every level.

The CNO will lead approximately 550 nurses and a structure that includes six Directors of Nursing, associate and assistant directors, frontline leaders and direct-care staff. The portfolio spans inpatient nursing, emergency services, perioperative services, primary and ambulatory care, and behavioral health. Behavioral health includes an 89-bed service and behavioral health associates who provide direct patient support under licensed nursing supervision.

The CNO reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer, Sandra Sneed, and works closely with the hospital's executive team. At the system level, the CNO participates in the CNO Council and partners with the System Chief Nurse Executive, who provides resources, nursing-practice leadership, recruitment support and systemwide programs while respecting the hospital CEO's authority and the local CNO's accountability for Woodhull.

The Ideal Candidate:
  • Current New York State licensure and registration as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN), or eligibility to obtain licensure, through the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
  • A Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration or a related field is required.
  • A satisfactory equivalent of education, training and experience. However, all candidates must have at least a Baccalaureate Degree or higher in Nursing.
  • A minimum of eight years of progressive nursing experience, including at least six years in administration or management and substantial executive-level leadership responsibility within a complex hospital or health system. Prior CNO-level experience is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading nursing practice, quality, safety, workforce and operational improvement in a complex acute care environment.
  • Meaningful experience in a unionized setting and the ability to work constructively with labor partners while maintaining clear performance expectations.
  • Experience serving diverse communities and leading within a highly diverse workforce; urban, public or safety-net health care experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a Magnet-designated organization or direct leadership of Magnet readiness or designation work is strongly preferred.
  • Behavioral health nursing leadership exposure is desirable given the importance and current needs of Woodhull's behavioral health services.
  • A record of recruiting, developing and retaining strong nursing leaders and building sustainable leadership pipelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with physicians, clinical chairs, executive peers, frontline staff and system leaders.
The Organization:

NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest municipal healthcare delivery system in the United States and serves as the cornerstone of New York City’s public healthcare infrastructure. The system provides care to more than one million New Yorkers annually through an integrated network of 11 acute care hospitals, community-based Gotham Health centers, post-acute and long-term care facilities, home care services, correctional health services and MetroPlus Health Plan. Across more than 70 patient care locations in the city’s five boroughs, approximately 45,000 employees provide a comprehensive continuum of care.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull is a 310-certified-bed community hospital serving the diverse neighborhoods of North Brooklyn, including Bushwick, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Fort Greene. The hospital provides approximately 406,000 clinic visits, 88,600 emergency department visits and 1,036 deliveries annually, underscoring both the breadth of its reach and its essential role in the community. Although Woodhull is a community hospital, it operates with the complexity and clinical intensity of a major urban medical center. Its broad continuum of services includes inpatient care, emergency medicine, primary and ambulatory care, perioperative services, women’s health, pediatrics, behavioral health and one of New York City’s largest dental programs. Woodhull also supports residency programs in internal medicine, pediatrics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, contributing to the education and development of the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The Location:

Located in North Brooklyn, Woodhull Medical Center offers candidates the opportunity to live and work in one of the most dynamic, diverse and culturally rich regions in the country. The hospital serves the neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Fort Greene—communities known for their distinctive character, strong neighborhood identities and extraordinary mix of cultures, languages and traditions.

Brooklyn offers exceptional opportunities for recreation and cultural engagement. Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Brooklyn Bridge Park are among the borough’s best-known destinations. The area also offers waterfront trails, neighborhood parks, fitness facilities, professional and collegiate sports, live music, theater and an internationally recognized dining scene. Manhattan’s museums, performing arts organizations, restaurants and landmarks are easily accessible, providing virtually unlimited options for entertainment and enrichment.

The anticipated base salary range is $305,000 to $325,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position is not bonus eligible. A comprehensive benefits package is offered in accordance with NYC Health + Hospitals policies.
