We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to manage and deliver mechanical engineering projects, with a particular focus on conveyor systems and bulk material handling within the mining and heavy industrial sectors.
This role will combine hands‑on engineering design with project management responsibilities, overseeing technical deliverables from initial concept and design through construction and commissioning. You will develop engineering solutions, conduct technical analyses, review equipment specifications, and ensure projects meet performance, safety, quality, budget, and schedule requirements.
Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, project managers, equipment suppliers, and construction personnel, you will contribute to the design and optimization of material handling systems while supporting the successful delivery of complex capital projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical Engineering Design: Develop detailed engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for mechanical systems and equipment.
- Conveyor & Material Handling Systems: Design, evaluate, and optimize conveyor systems and bulk material handling equipment, including belts, idlers, pulleys, drives, take‑up systems, crushers, feeders, and chutes.
- Project Management: Plan, coordinate, and execute engineering projects, ensuring deliverables are completed within agreed schedules, budgets, and technical requirements.
- Technical Analysis & Modelling: Perform engineering calculations, simulations, conveyor sizing, capacity assessments, throughput analysis, and bulk material flow modelling.
- Equipment Selection & Specification: Evaluate equipment requirements, review vendor proposals, and ensure selected equipment meets operational needs, design criteria, and applicable standards.
- Engineering Documentation: Prepare and review technical deliverables, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment datasheets, Bills of Material (BOMs), and Engineering Work Packages (EWPs).
- Design Reviews & Quality Assurance: Conduct engineering design reviews, verify technical calculations, and maintain accurate records of design changes, revisions, and approvals throughout the project lifecycle.
- Project Planning & Cost Control: Contribute to project scopes, budgets, cost estimates, staffing plans, and engineering schedules, including the development and maintenance of Primavera P6 schedules.
- Construction & Commissioning Support: Resolve technical issues during equipment installation, construction, commissioning, and operational start‑up.
- Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure mechanical designs comply with relevant engineering standards, material handling design criteria, and applicable workplace and mining safety regulations.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinate with electrical, process, structural, project controls, procurement, and construction teams to ensure integrated engineering solutions.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve design processes, engineering standards, equipment performance, and technical knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, with at least seven years of relevant engineering experience, including lead or supervisory responsibilities.
- Alternatively: A master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with at least five years of relevant engineering experience, including lead or supervisory responsibilities.
- Strong technical knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, design methodologies, calculations, and engineering standards.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex engineering projects, including technical delivery, project coordination, and resource planning.
- Proven ability to develop and review detailed engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical reports.
- Experience evaluating engineering data, analyzing complex technical problems, and developing practical design recommendations.
- Strong understanding of engineering safety practices, hazard identification, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, training, or coordinating engineering personnel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to manage competing technical priorities while maintaining quality, safety, schedule, and budget requirements.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration and/or an advanced engineering degree.
- Significant experience designing and optimizing conveyor systems and bulk material handling equipment within mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial operations.
- Expertise in conveyor belt sizing, capacity calculations, throughput analysis, equipment selection, and system performance evaluation.
- Experience modelling bulk material flow and particle interactions to assess system behaviour and optimize equipment performance.
- Familiarity with industry standards and safety requirements, including MSHA and OSHA regulations.
- Proficiency with material handling engineering software such as Belt Analyst, Ansys Rocky, or equivalent conveyor design and particle simulation tools.
- Experience developing material handling engineering deliverables, equipment specifications, engineering work packages, and design documentation.
- Proficiency in project planning and controls, including Primavera P6 schedules, engineering budgets, cost estimates, and staffing plans.
- Experience working with engineering databases and design management software.
- Practical experience supporting construction, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of conveyor and material handling systems.
