Job Summary

Title: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Annual Salary: $200,000–$250,000 (variable components and compensation based on experience and skills)

Reports To

Co‑Managing Partners, COO, Financial Partner, and Vice Managing Partner

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Oversee the Accounting Department, budget preparation, and financial analysis.
• Track KPIs, manage cash flow, participate in monetary decisions, and coordinate with firm management on financial aspects of the firm’s vision.

Responsibilities

• Financial planning and strategy: Develop financial strategies, create forecasts and reports, and plan for capital and staffing needs to support firm growth and profitability.
• Advise partners and firm leadership on financial performance, forecasting, and business planning.
• Lead financial analysis for practice group performance, attorney productivity, compensation models, and pricing initiatives.
• Financial reporting and analysis: Oversee accounting, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
• Manage profitability analysis by developing metrics to analyze revenue, expenditures, realization, utilization, receivables, and other major categories on financial statements.
• Budgeting, forecasting and collection management: Manage the firm’s budget and provide financial guidance and support.
• Oversee billing, collections, and trust accounting activities, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to ethical requirements.
• Enhance billing processes, matter budgeting, and pricing structures to improve realization rates and profitability.
• Develop systems for monitoring WIP, accounts receivable and partner‑ and department‑level collections performance.
• Develop systems for accounts payable management, expense management and credit card monitoring.
• Financial operations & risk management: Manage risk, ensure compliance with relevant regulations, and adhere to legal and trust accounting rules.
• Manage cash flow, capital planning, partner distributions, and banking relationships.
• Oversee payroll, benefits, financial administration, and expense management.
• Identify financial risks and implement policies, controls, and reporting mechanisms to mitigate them.
• Oversee preparation of financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and monthly/quarterly reporting.
• Manage finance‑related audits (401(k), workers’ comp, etc.), tax filings, and relationships with financial vendors and institutions.
• Leadership and management: Supervise accounting and billing managers, lead the finance team, and mentor staff.
• Lead and develop the finance and accounting team to ensure high performance and effective service delivery.
• Collaborate with HR, IT, Practice Group Leaders, Office Administrators, and other operational leaders.
• Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Strategic partnership: Collaborate with Managing Partners and senior leadership on strategic planning and major decisions such as expansion, M&A, major new hires, significant expenditures, and adding employee benefits and incentives.
