Work Location: Randall's Island Park, New York, NY 10035 – Icahn Stadium (three days per week in person)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, Inc. (“RIPA”, “Alliance”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with an operating budget of $11M. The Alliance works with the City of New York to provide a dynamic destination through a wide range of sports venues, cultural events, educational opportunities and environmental exploration at Randall’s Island Park (the “Park”). RIPA is responsible for stewarding 330 acres of parkland and sustains, develops, maintains and programs the Park.

The Alliance is seeking a strategic, forward-thinking Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”). Reporting to the President, the CFO will serve as the organization’s senior financial leader and will be responsible for strong fiscal stewardship and for helping shape the financial future of an expanding, mission-driven organization. The CFO will work in close partnership with the President, Chief of Staff and other members of the leadership team, including the Board of Trustees to ensure RIPA’s financial strategy supports capital improvements, athletic fields, programming, community access initiatives and long-term sustainability. The CFO will oversee a team of two people.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as a core member of the leadership team, helping shape the organization’s long-term financial strategy
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen revenue mix, optimize reserves and invest assets to support sustainability
  • Oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budget forecasting, payroll, liquidity management and financial reporting
  • Ensure accurate, timely financial statements and reporting for leadership, Board Committees and meetings
  • Lead Finance, Audit and Investment Committees with thoughtful analysis, reporting and long-term planning
  • Report to and collaborate with the Treasurer of the Board and Committee Chairs of the Board to prepare for Committee and Board meetings
  • Lead, mentor and develop members of the Finance team
  • Assist the Development and Programming departments to provide financial information for grant proposals and other financial information
  • Work closely with the Development and Programming departments to track grants and provide accurate reports for donors
  • Develop financial models that support operational needs, capital growth and programmatic expansion
  • Develop long-range financial projections, cash flow forecasts and scenario planning to anticipate operational, capital and programmatic costs
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the President and Chief of Staff, including revenue and expense forecasting, cost allocation and financial planning, working closely with department leads
  • Monitor actuals against budget and provide timely, proactive analysis and recommendations throughout to the Board on at least a quarterly basis, with monthly information provided to leadership
  • Evaluate and recommend investment strategies consistent with nonprofit best practices
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls and financial procedures to safeguard organizational assets and reduce risk
  • Provide financial review of major contracts and vendor agreements
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, audits, tax filings and government grant requirements
  • Manage the full annual audit process
  • Manage relationships with auditors, financial institutions, investment advisors, and other key financial partners
  • Ensure strong reserve management and risk mitigation practices
  • Secure comprehensive insurance coverage while collaborating with the Chief of Staff and Office Manager on HR practices, employee benefits and organizational risk including cybersecurity
  • All other tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related field plus 10 years of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or a related field, plus 15+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, grant compliance and diverse revenue structures
  • Proactive, strategic, and solution-oriented, with the ability to anticipate challenges and plan for long-term financial sustainability
  • Experience working with investment portfolios and reserve strategies
  • Demonstrated success building financial infrastructure in growing organizations
  • Highest level of ethical standards including confidentiality, discretion, good judgment and transparency with processes
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build positive working relationships across the organization
  • Excellent planning, analytical and modeling skills
  • Ability to shift priorities and focus, when needed
  • Flexibility to work outside of typical work hours
  • Motivated and focused, able to work independently and as part of a team

  • Experience working in the non-profit or public sector
  • Personal interest in public green spaces
